dedicated without control panel
how difficult is it to manage a server without a control panel? I do have the basic linux knowledge as a user but not much at the admin level. should I just go for CPanel?

If you have the knowledge as a Linux user in using terminal mode, managing the server is easy for you. Otherwise, I would suggest you not to try it yourself if you are going for a production server.
Free control panel like Webmin does simplify the managing work, but it isn't a good panel for production server. cPanel is still the preferred choice.
Thanks.

Yes, it's possible. I've setupped my server with no control panels at all. I installed webmin, but never used it. removed it now, so there is one process less
Currently i'm writing a "control panel" myself to add virtual users with quota.
In linux is everything possible, you just need to read a LOT!
If you have very basic knowledge of linux, you can expect to use the first month up on setting it up. Then a control panel might be cheaper...

what I actually hate about linux is that there is not ONE documentation or ONE way to do things. The freedom of choices also means a exponential amount of reading needed...

I was thinking of getting one of those dirt-cheap managed.com servers since it has no setup fee or contract I can play around for a while and see what I can manage to get done with it.

Why in the world does everyone jump straight to cPanel?? Ensim, Plesk, and DirectAdmin are all great control panels as well, and all are a good deal cheaper. I honestly think Plesk 7 is much better than cPanel and the list price for an unlimited license is about half the list price of a fully owned cPanel license.

Most providers just offer cPanel? Let's see, EV1 just started offering cPanel and still offers Plesk and Ensim at lower rates than cPanel. ServerMatrix offers Plesk and cPanel, 1&1 uses Plesk 7, Interland uses Plesk, ServerBeach uses Plesk, and RackSpace.com uses Plesk. I believe I've listed many of the big names in this industry and I'm failing to see how cPanel is dominant in offerings, but it seems to be the most requested, I just don't get it. The only providers I can think of that solely use cPanel are Nocster and Managed.com
Note: I know I didn't list everyone, but I listed the two most popular budget server providers, the world's largest hosting provider, and one of the US's largest hosting providers.

I would go for a control panel if you arent fully sure of yourself to manage a server. It will just make your life easier.
More people request Cpanel because of how user friendly it is
Plesk is more stable though

kyriakos if you are just planning to host your own sites, I think so you can get away without any control panel, but when you have users they demand it.
I recently got a server from managed.com dont have any damm control panel on it, I just knew some basics of Unix worked on it 5 years ago, I had to do a lot of reading 2-3 days (spent around 18 hrs/per day on the comp) to set things right, but now things are fine and my sites work great without any control panel!

You did it faster than I did then
I have lotsa experience with linux (but it's with Gentoo) and it took me two weeks.
Well, actually, setting the site up took me a day or two, but tweaking and configuring it took a lot of time. Being used to gentoo, i wanted to tweak that debianserver to the best performance/stability-config.
After doing a lot of tweaking I managed to get a 400% boost in performance from the standard install. (based on my forum's load-information)
Very happy with it, and didn't need a control panel, which means that there is one less process hogging valuable memory.
