I personally have quite a few accounts around the industry, as well as working for a prominent cPanel host. However, I've noticed, in most of the accounts that I have, they are very weak on the statistics, they either:
Not resolve the IPs (making geographical tracking impossible)
Run the logs once a day
Often not run the logs due to high load
There are other weaknesses, mostly due to the control panel. However, is there any hosts left that have decent statistics? I know cPanel is planning on doing a good bit with statistics soon...
Anyone noticed this? Anyone know hosts who update more often? Obviously I could use a VPS, or one of my acocunts..but that's not the answer I'm looking for, I like to use other hosts...give sme the download (who knows I could have an account with you..unless you're cheap, than I don't for sure.)
While that's not directly relevant to improving stats for users, hopefully with that reducing overall CPU used by logs, most hosts will be apt to allowing things such as resolving IPs, or running logs more often
Well, as a host there's many ways of preventing that, such as crontab'ing the /scripts/runlogsnow to run every few hours, that way when it does run logs at the same time as backups, there will only be 4 hours worth to run, rather than 24 hours worth.
I'm not looking to improve ours necccessarily, more looking for reasons why others aren't doing the above (being resolving IPs, and running logs more often)
If you spread the load out over the whole day, rather than letting it all collect it'll be much easier on the server anyhow
I agree nickn. Is it just that the good statistics packages for hosts are too expensive? They would have to charge too much in order to cover costs? It may also be that most customers don't require much for their stats. I happen to not be one of those. i like detailed stats, etc. Maybe some of the hosts can chime in and give a persepctive.
