    Addressing a Cover Letter

I'm tired of coming across these androgenous names. I'm applying for several jobs as I'm about to graduate and keep running into these types of names: Pat Sheehy

How do I address a cover letter to a name like this. I can't tell if it's a male or female. I'm under the impression cover letters should generally be somewhat formal so I start them out as Dear Mr. Smith or whatever. Is it allright to just say "Dear Pat" when I come across names like this? Isn't that too informal?

    What are your thoughts?

Dear potential employer, although business documents usually go as to whom it may concern:
Patron: I'd like my free lunch please.
Cafe Manager: Free lunch? Did you read the fine print stating it was an April Fool's joke.
Patron: I read the same way I listen, I ignore the parts I don't agree with. I'm suing you for false advertising.
Cafe Owner: Is our lawyer still working pro bono?

Yeah usually I can put 'Dear Sir or Madam' or somethiing like that but in this case since I KNOW the name, I'm assuming I must use it and use it correctly.
