Service that will buy a domain after it expires?

Is there a service that will monitor a domain about to expire and then buy it for you when it does?

If someone else did the same thing who would get the domain?

It's more who registers it first.. They keep pinging the registry and as soon as they notice it's available, they try and grab it, the first one with the reg info in, wins..

David, there's no guarantee that you'll even be able to snag the name. If someone renews it the day before it's set to expire, and you've paid to "nab" the name upon expiration, you'll lose not only that "right" to nab the name, but any funds that you've paid to nab the domain.

It's a dirty tactic, I've had one customer that lost her domain because some moron that snapped her name, and is now using it as a redirect for a porn site. Sadly, this was a VERY popular name, averaging over 500 million page views a month between the two domains.

If Ultsearch wants the name, it'll be very difficult to grab it.

Some registrars will allow you to choose another name if they failed at registering the backordered domain name. I know godaddy has something like this, but I don't know about other providers.

That's pretty sad if someone who was getting 500 million page views a month forgot to keep their domain name paid for...considering they were getting as many page views as yahoo.

Did you not alert the customer?

I know its not the hosts responsibility however if it was pulling that amount of traffic I would have gone more than just the usual email notifications of expiry!

Mods, I think this forum should be moved to the proper domain name discussions.

Anyway, basically you can try and get the name either through an auction based service or a plain backordering service.
If it's very important to you and/or you think there's going to be some competition you better go for an auction, if it's just to have someone to do it for you, with little importance and no likely competition for the same name, you might as well go for plain backordering.

For the record, since it seems that everyone likes to trash my posts (Bah on all of y'all. ) Yes, I did notify her, then she came running to me to try to do a manual snap. Less than 3 hours after it was made available, some jerkwad snapped it. :/

Just thought I would add my experiences here.

I have had great experience with namewinner. Pool is pretty good. expirefish not so good and the first one I tried. More than one time, I had noticed that domains that expirefish was supposed to pickup for me when I just went to manually register it. Then their interface would still say that it had not yet expired or did not update the new registration info. It did work a couple of times for me though.
