Does anybody know what the general consensus here in www.webhostingtalk.com is with respect to the "best" FTP tool? I did try a search but couldn't find anything relevant. Sorry if its been asked before!

As with anything else, there is no "best" (IMHO). It all depends on what you're trying to do and what fits you as a person (and also fits your needs).
A lot of people use WS_FTP_LE, but that's a measure of popularity. Some claim that SmartFTP is "the best", other vouch for Filezilla and so on. Try as many as you can and see which one fits you best.
I used WS_FTP_LE because it was the first one I ever used and I got used to it, but I switched to Filezilla. I'm almost fan of open source.
As I said, try as many as possible and see which one you like most.
Cheers!

The Best? Hm ... for me these are LeapFTP and CoreFTP.
They are simple and effective.

WS-FTP Pro. It ain't the prettiest but is a serious workhorse for FTP. If you download and use the LE version and like it I'd seriously recommend their commercial version. It's never failed me.

I would have to say CuteFTP is the only one I have used and will ever used, I don't see any reason why anyone would go anywhere else. Costs money, but it is well worth it...

I use flashFXP. You can do server to server transfers with it. It saves a lot of time.

I'll let you guys in on a little secret, there's this FTP program that I use, it's really convenient, it's called... Internet Explorer.

Seems that there are two firm winners that come out on top.
Cute FTP seems to be popular along with
WS FTP
Which is the most expensive and is one free? I have a feeling WS is free as someone mentioned you can get a commercial version of it.
I appreciate all the comments thanks!

I use IE as an FTP client as well and have liked it pretty well. It's able to do about all the basic stuff you would need to do. However, I don't know exactly how secure it is. I'm sure they have at least some level of encryption or protection.
Does anyone know, security-wise, if IE is lacking compared to any of the other programs here?
