My web site is hosted by vi.net on their secure web500 package, the MBPS is 2000 which is high and meant to be the fastest you can get. I am up for renewal soon and am happy with vi.net but it's always a good idea to see what else is on the market. It looks like a dedicated or VPS is a better performance than shared hosting but the MBPS is 10 - 200 on most dedicated vps servers.
I understand that on a shared package if a website is really busy it slows yours down, so is MBPS an issue to be looking at when searching for a hosting company?
Most hosting companies are on 10Mbit - 100Mbit lines. If your host is running off of a 2Mbit line, I would suggest doing a few speed tests elsewhere and seeing what you get.

On a shared hosting account, your site will be effected when other web sites on that server are experiencing heavy traffic. However, if the company doesn't oversell the server, there should be no problem with shared hosting. Have you noticed any speed issues with your web site recently?
Also, if you went with a VDS, you may run into the same problem of slow down due to others using up system resources. A VDS is supposed to allocate hardware resources for you, but from the reviews of VDS that I have read on WHT this isn't always the case.
