What type of error code if any? Do you get any beeps when you boot up? If so how many and what type(IE long, short beeps) What type of noise is the hard drive making? Clicking? Banging? Or just like a busy read and write? Can you see the BIOS recognize all of your IDE devices at boot up? Note you may have to turn off the boot up display by pressing <TAB> or <esc> during the initial start up to see if the devices are recognized.
I assume you did all the standard troubleshooting. Cables plugged in and installed correctly. Red line goes to the 1 pin for your IDE devices. Stuff like that.

hehehe.. poor Technics
Well try fidling around with the data cable. The cable which goes to your hard disk must be having another outlet somewhere in the middle. Put that into the Cd-rom. And try to detect it as the Primary Slave. Also, check the Jumper settimng of the cd-rom. See what they are set to. Hope this helps.

This may be stupid, ODE mentioned it. Just because you've got the red stripe correct on the CD-ROM, that doesn't mean the cable is pluggend into the MB correctly. Does the CD-ROM activity light stay on? If so, the cable is swapydooed.

So then, it is getting power. All you need to do is figure out which data cable. Try out what I said, might work, it did for me

Is the purpose to restore the pc to working order or to have your students learn how to restore it to working order?
Either way, check the connections (make sure all cables are properly attached at both ends).
Properly utilized, computers can be a good learning tool in teaching precision, not making assumptions, and being methodical in one's work.
A saying I devised might help here, "Assume nothing, test everything."

It wouldn't happen to be a Micron PC would It?
We had 3 cdroms go bad within a week of each other on some PII400 Microns. Micron took care of the problems very quickly, 2 days I think. So . . . don't rule out the cdrom being bad as well.
