    GMail = More Spam

Ok, so I don't know about you, but I get about 30-40 emails a day about viagra. Now, if I use google's gmail, and they scan my email, then they will deliver viagra ads to me. Now, not only will I get TONS of viagra spam, but google will blast me with viagra ads. err

Okay, I don't see the problem here, you don't like Gmail, so don't use it, no one is forcing you to.

Google are very concious of the current email spam situation and are goin to attempt to remove alot(I wont say all although they did) of spam.

    Gmail & MailFrontier

I'm a Gmail user. They do have a spam folder, but I haven't got any spam yet so I don't know how good it is.
As of yet, I haven't seen any Google ads either.

For my pop account I use MailFrontier to filter spam. It plugs right into Outlook and Outlook Express and uses a bunch of methods of id spam. When I first installed it was blocking like 95%, but now it just depends on when they release a new version how effective it is.. still above 90%. Version 4.1 is very stable and also catches fraud.

Its a free trial but you can continue using it.

Until Google drops this dumb idea about reading all emails sent and recieved in a Gmail account, don't send an email to anyone with a Gmail account if you value your privacy.

Yes, Google states that a bot is the only one reading the emails, but what I don't like is that all emails sent and recieved are all store permanently for future reference in it's servers, even if the account holder decides to close the account. So anybody, Google, the government, hackers could view this information.

Lets say you need to email personal information, like you're trying to get a birth certificate, more than likely your Social Security Number, personal address, phone number will be in this email requesting this service. Would you want this valuable information read and stored on Google servers for future reference by whomever wants to read it?

Your shopping habits, personal information, passwords sent from other sites, extremely personal emails will all be read and stored on Google!

Now, if you don't value your privacy, then open a Gmail account, or send and email to a Gmail account holder.

<removed> Seriously, I know I don't have to use the email. I'm just pointing out a possible problem. Think about it. If they scan your email for keywords and deliver ads based on those keywords, then I imagine we (just about any gmail user) will eventually get a bunch of viagra, enhancement, and whatever else kind of "spam" type ads.

RMF, you're worried about Viagra ads displayed by Google because they read your Spam?

What you should be worried about is your privacy, and the privacy of family and friends!

Here's a solution RMF, don't get a Gmail account, and if a friend or someone in your family decides to get one then tell them in one email about the problems with Gmail, and not just about Spam, recommend another email service, and tell them to write to you with this other email service other than Gmail. If they decide to stick with Gmail, then don't write them anymore, unless you don't mind Gmail reading your emails and keeping it stored on it's servers permanently.

a quick fix to this is that they only scan the email that your send out and that your revieve from contacts on your "safe list" this way spam wont get scanned and thus there wont be any keywords related to it.

Also if google are going to have that much space given to people (with a small amount of overselling ) they wont want it filling up with unopened spam, so they will probably give people the ability to report spam and this way make their spam detectors better so if 1000 people get a spam email and some report it, that spam message wont be sent to any of the other people or would be deleated from their inbox, or marked as spam...

I agree there is a priviacy issue here, but stop and think for a seccond.

Say you email someone this message:

Hey babe, just wanted to email you to make sure your still on for tonights dinner at that italian resteraunt. Maybe you could come round mine afterwards? Love you, namehere

You would probably end up with only three adwords targeted and that would be dinner or probably italian and resteruant. Actualy make that four keywords they would pick up on "love" too. Fine with me, I dont see any privacy issues here they use a bot to roam your messages, and only a few select words are chosesn and im sure they have filters to remove names, details and explicit content. They wont be recording any personal details such as names or addresses and I think its your own fault if you send credit card details though email, personaly. Unless your useing encrypted mail (such as i am )

Anyways I could easily say DONT USE HOTMAIL there are privacy issues because they scan your email to detect spam! Get real, the google mail system is basicaly a spam detector used instead to detect spam, but to detect keywords of interest and give feedback to you the end user. And as your the only person who will be seeing the ads i think thats private enough, they probably wont keep logs on keywords unless you click on the link and then thats part of googles adwords system.

I think all this paranoya about privacy is silly, i mean only the guilty are paranoied about privacy incase they get caught doing something they shouldnt

So what if Google may read your e-mail... what about webhosts?

So carbon12, you never heard of hackers?

ID theft is on the rise, specially from servers. We shouldn't make it easy for them, specially since Google will keep all your emails long after you close your Gmail account.

    Think about it.

I think the other thing that is funny, If you look at the amount of Hotmail and Yahoo email users, Thats probably beyond Millions of people. Do you honestly believe that there are enough people that work for these companies that just sit around reading your emails? Some of you people should be more worried about government agencies and spooks than google..

I remember reading a thread started here about a host getting caught doing this. I'll provide a link to that thread as soon as I find it.

Gmail users have to worry about Google, because that's going to be the number one source for information by government agencies and spooks.

    Dont forget Google is intelligent.

Gmail thinks :hmmm what does RMF need after he takes viagra ?

A bottle of wine, a woman, condoms, asprins [for the hangover the next day]

Gmail concludes: Ok lets send RMF ads for wine, dating and escorts URLs, condoms, asprins

    Hurrah ! Gmail rocks

RMF: No need for childish comments. Also, why do you open the Viagra e-mails anyway? All of the Viagra spam I get is easily recognizable as spam, so don't bother opening the e-mail. Again, I don't see the issue here, if you don't want ad's related to context of the e-mails you recieve, just don't use Gmail. I know your pointing it out to people but if they are this paranoid too then they shouldn't use Gmail either.

I don't know what most people are scared of with privacy issues, if you are not doing something wrong, you don't have to worry. And for those who are saying they are afraid of sending out Password\Credit Card numbers, SS numbers, just don't use Gmail, sheesh!

I'm sorry this message is a little late and a little out of order but here are a few answers to some earlier questions:

    1. Gmail doesn't offer POP, I was talking about another email account I have that I use MailFrontier as my spam filter. Works Awsome!

    2. I am in the Gmail Beta and so far they haven't showed any ads. You have to be invited to the beta, and new people who join the beta aren't allowed to invite others. I don't know if later on I will be allowed to invite others.
