I developed a web page on photoshop and I make pop up menu using Dreamweaver (using hotspot). But my pop up menus doesn't work over the iframes on browsers older than IE 5.0. How can I solve the problem? When mouse over, my menus hide above the iframes on IE 5.0. But there is no problem on IE 6.0+.
I sort of understand. Certain elements on webpages using certain browsers tend to take the top layer regardless. For example try displaying a <div> over a <select> box, you can't do it. What Microsoft does here on their website is simply to do a hide all select items when displaying a menu. I guess the same is possibly true of iframes. In addition to this elements of the page are limited to their current frame.
However there is one work around that allows you in Internet Explorer to place elements outside the browser window on the screen. I have used it myself but can't remember the name of it right at this moment, I'll try to find it (very good for tooltips!)
Nope, z-index is not going to work. The problem goes very deep ... to the way Windows "draws" certain kinds of elements, including drop-down boxes. I can't remember what method is used, exactly, but I believe they add another "layer" on top of the program window itself (for example, Internet Explorer, Word, etc.) This "layer" can be thought of as another window without any titlebars, etc. As such, since when you use <div> tags, you're adding layers within Internet Explorer and the dropdown is actually drawn on top of Internet Explorer, any <div> tags appear below the drop down boxes.
I might be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that this is what's causing this issue.
