Internet Speed and Windows Server 2003 Running IIS6
The last month or so my internet has all of a sudden turned SO slow. I phoned Telus tech, got them to check the lines, there doing test, nothing seems to help. So i started playing around with my server, nothing was working. I finaly have narrowed it down too IIS. When i disable IIS the internet runs at good speed (1000+down/400+up). when IIS is enabled it runs slow (100down/10up).
Now my IIS has 20+ sites on it, but almost all are subdomains and don't really recievem very much web traffic, I dont think the amount of traffic IIS is serving is the issue, i think its something else, I just dont know what.
Also sometime even with IIS running (as it usualy is always running) the internet will run fast, but this is becoming more rare.
I did some more playing around with IIS, i manualy stopped each virtual site. and then one by one turned them on, this whole time the internet speed was fast. Then 20min later it was back slow again. So i have found if i restart IIS the internet instantly speeds up, but after 15 or so minutes its back slow again.
Maybe you are getting DOSed.. try running the Network Monitor tool and examine the packets heading in and out of your NIC. Examine what happens with IIS/MySQL on and off. If you find a certain set of packets flooding your NIC when you turn on MySQL for example, post the capture here and someone will more than likely be able to tell you what is happening.
So it appears i have the problem fixed, i think i must have been getting DOS'ed.
Instead of using the Windows 2003 built-in firewall, i setup packet filters, so i blocked all ports except the ones i need for webserver. and BOOM my internet is fast. My upload bandwidth dropped A LOT!! it was crazy.
