Do you guys know how to create tar files using the command prompt?
Withh ssh access its not a problem since we would use the following command via "putty" (in order to tar up folders)
tar -cvf myfolder.tar myfolder
However since we are not allowed SSH access on this specific server (due to security measures) I figured there might be a work-around. That is, the ability to tar files/folders using the command prompt in the form:
ftp> tar -cvf myfolder.tar myfolder (of course this won't work and this is where I get stuck)
"tar" is actually a program under the UNIX environment, and will not run when trying to do it via FTP, as FTP is a different protocol connection to the machine that does not give you terminal-level access.
<offtopic>BTW, I find it funny that loads of folks learn linux on a server itself when we now have cygwin. It is an ideal way to get to know linux without having to get a linux OS installed.</offtopic>
