invalid IP address for a name record

Fairly new to this so apologies if going over old/dumb ground. I've just set up a co lo'd server and am trying to point my domain names at it, I have tested it out with free domains from dyndns.org which work fine but when trying to change the a-record in my domain name host control panel I get the following error: -

"The IP address for the A record you entered (217.xx.xxx.xxx) was invalid"

Is this a problem their end or am I doing something incorrectly? What is classed as a valid/invalid IP for an A record?

Cheers

There can be pleny of reasons for this error. What control panel you're using to change your DNS records?

This is a very obvious thing, but are you sure you entered a correct and valid IP address, i.e. 4 blocks of numbers separated by dots with each number between 0 and 255?

Yeah definately a proper IP, I use the same one for testing websites with dummy domains from dyndns.org

I infact have 2 IPs (server has 2 network connections at datacentre) and recieve the same message for either.

I've e-mailed easily support, but its bank holiday and they're not the quickest at the best of times.

Confused ???
