I'm also an amatuer radio operator and they're testing it near us. It knocks out the HF band and even the CB band. Our local utility expects to have it in place by end of next year, much to the dismay of the local ham clubs.
For more information here's a link to the ARRL's website about BPL: BPL Information73's, Kim
Everything happens for a reason I make up.

Im with you KimmiKat,
I feel sorry for you,you must be in 1 of the test zones
So how bad is it??????? Can you use 10 or 11??? 27.185 or 27.555???????? I would think that by zero beating the carrier on am,you could still talk on SIDEBAND to someone (By zero beating the am carrier tone and talking on that frequency)
Im very much into 11 meters, this is terrible.......We have talked about them possibly doing this ON PURPOSE TO CONTROL HF COMMUNICATIONS (uugghh) I have talked on 10 be4 and 2,but mostly 11...
The new world order is near Thanx for the link on the BPL info

I just got an update on this tonight:
The Date for final consideration has been pushed back to June 1st,and there is a TEST AREA IN MY STATE!!!!!
Supposedly it mucks up from below 1 meg (am broadcast band) to 80 megs!!!!!!!! (Just Below the FM broadcast band)
I cant believe this is happening,i cant believe they are willing to compromise that much spectrum!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is un-real.........

It really does suck, big time. However, if it poses enough problem HAMs will need to push the FCC, since they are licensed to use the spectrum without interference.

BPL is a huge threat to the ammature radio community. We dread the day it worms it's way up to seattle - it's coming sooner than we had hoped.
I can't believe the FCC approved something like this. It's their job to keep interfearance OUT of the airwaves, expecially with critical HF communications.
HF is the only way that airplanes can communicate over the oceans and the north pole. Let alone the fact that it will virtually destroy the ability to receive shortwave radio stations from other countries.
I'm afraid that it's too late for the ARRL to stop it.-= System Administrator Windows/Linux - MCDST, MCP =-

I dunno,i guess im a born 11m'terer,i just cant understand why they are doing this, just for the $$$?????? Most likely along with trying to control HF traffic.........(WE HAVE GOTTA DO SOMETHING!!!!!!!!!) We cant just sit here and do nothing!!!!!!!!

Ahh okay, I stand corrected.
I talk quiet a bit on 2m and 440 as they are real popular locally. Only have my Tech though so I can't go over to HF..

UPDATE
The date has been now pushed back until JUNE 22nd...
This is good news!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bottom line is:
THE FCC KNOWS WHAT A STUPID/****** UP IDEA THIS IS AND THEY DONT WANT KAOSS TO BREAK OUT ALL OVER THE BANDS SO THEY KEEP PUSHING IT BACK (INSTEAD OF ADMITTING HOW STUPID IT IS)
Lets continue to hope this idea sinks many fathoms below!!!!!!!!!

:: sigh :: I would love to see us get that type of connection here. We can't get DSL and our only other option is "DirecWay" It may cut out all of this "HAM" stuff that you keep talking about...but thats why we have IRC and Messenger services

I heard in some area instead of running it through the transformers that they just might spread the connection using Wi-Fi!

Yes, in the UK at least they are looking at putting Wireless transmitters into street lights. The traffic people are going to be using wireless networking for speed cameras anyway, so they thought they would make even more money by selling the extra bandwidth onto home and business consumers.
