alternatives of Akamai
I was wondering if there are other companies that offer services similar to that of Akamai.com ?
I am interested in Akamai's Edge computing service.
But would like to know about alternatives.
Thanks.

hmmm does anybody have some hard $ # to share for akamai/speedera? how much do they charge for delivering e.g. 10TB of static pics per month out of a pool of 100GB pics?
How much can u negotiate the prices down?
Does it even make sense still? to me an ev1+thttpd or SM celeron box serving pics directly from ram "feels" the same as CNN etc. using akamai...

Akami isn't just about speed though, it's about reliability (Unless someone flushes the cache out, oops) as they use Multicasting to put content at multiple locations with the same addresses - and due to the way BGP works, your ISP will choose the best location to fetch content from, if that goes away, then BGP will calculate a route to one of the alternatives etc. etc. Fairly simplified, but pretty much how I understand it works.

they are mostly combining round robin dns, load balancing & rsync and spread your stuff around the world
i've spread my dns servers in 3 different locations in america, europe and asia and what i've tested is the browser will choose the closest location to bind. i believe its not just for dns, if multiple A records are returned by a request, the closest will mostly be chosenLast edited by lwknet; 06-04-2004 at 08:53 AM.

AFAIK, Akamai don't rely on anything as uggly as round robin, they use Anycasting (Which was what my brain thought I was typing in my previous posts, but my hands decided otherwise) which is the process of announcing the same routes via BGP at multiple locations and due to the way that BGP places emphasis on hop count, generally speaking, when you view Akamai content via your ISP, you'll go to the "nearest" server - Although I say nearest with some caution as we all know hop count isn't the only thing BGP is influenced by.

Also, you might want to check other CDNs such as VitalStream and Limelights. I haven't used them myself but afaik they provide good service for a better price than Akamai.
