    Moving Servers

Whats the easiest and safest way to transfer a giant forum from one dedicated server to another?

Change the TTL to 15 minutes, wait a day for propagation, stop the forum, do the transfer, update dns on old server to point at the new machine, and then start the forum on the new server, update your dns records to at the registrar to point at the new server.

You would need root on both ideally.

you could make a cpanel back up, or back up database, files then upload.

checkout hotscripts.com for back up software but most back up the database OR files..

Well if he don't do the steps I mention, he will face:

    1. Out of sync databases
    2. Propagation time of up to 24-72 hours

Ive had bad experiences with backing up large databases. It always takes forever and eventually times out...

The main thing i was wondering was transferring the files and database to the new server.

Do it in SSH. The backup will be over in no time. Refer to www.mysql.com for the syntax.

I transfered the database onto the new machine already. My question is this: After I transfer my http files to the new machine, and change the domain nameserver, theres going to be a period of time when the domain still points at the old server...

Is there a way to set my old server to run off the MySQL database of the new server? What would i put for the sql_host variable? I tried putting the IP address but it said could not connect.
