I am one who got suckered into Host4me's $50.00 per year reseller package auction that was run on eBay. I see that a few here have mentioned it, so I thought others might be interested in my experience.
I used paypal to pay, and sure enough I got an email back from host4me almost instantly with my WHM login info. I uploaded my sites, and left positive feedback for them. Three days later, my sites and the host4me sites were down. I spent several days faxing and leaving messeges at their provided "customer service" numbers asking to take advantage of the 14 day money back pledge they advertised in their ebay listing. At the same time, I emailed ebay trust/fraud department and the same at paypal. Both said they'd look into it.
Host4me finally came back up just long enough to email us saps their pleas to drop our complaints to ebay, and promised to be bulletproof from then on. Several days later, they were gone again, and they still are.
During the short time host4me was up again, I used whois.sc to check the IP address of the server my reseller account was on. It listed 23,000+ sites hosted on the server, yes, twenty-three thousand.
eBay in their famous customer service manner emailed to let me know that they had suspended Host4me's account, closed their eBay store, and deleted the auction I had bought from. They proudly proclaimed that the results of the auction were null and void. The only problem of course is that Host4me already had my and everyone else's money that fell for the scam. Sufice it to say that Host4me hasn't made any attempt to get my $50.00 back to me eventhough eBay claims the auction null and void. Of course both eBay and paypal have washed their hands of any liability dispite the fact that Host4me was an eBay ID-verified seller, and the purchase protection icon was clearly displayed in the auction listing. eBay and Paypal have explained that that only applies to physical merchandise.
I paid $50.00 for a total of 8 days use of a reseller account.
I am now looking for a real service to purchase a reseller account from, but am very hesitant to commit my money until I can be really certain.
You know what? They almost got me too. You really have to watch that "If it is too good to be true it probably is" saying. Before I paid them I tried to get a hold of them and also tried to talk to eBay about them to no avail on both sides. Why is there always someone out there trying to scam someone else.
Talk about being pissed off. Good thing it is only $50 but hey I'm not rich and I am sure your not either so it is a lot of money and will take a while to get back. Wow 23,000 is like 1,150,000 dollars. I hope this guy gets caught.
Money back pledge, eBay ID-verified, eBay purchase protection, Paypal verified, Paypal purchase protection. Scam artist bilks God only knows how many people out of $50.00 a pop and all of a sudden those fancy icons and protections don't apply. How convenient, eh?
I don't think they sold 23,000 reseller accounts that's just how many sites were hosted on the server.
I happen to be a customer of host4me, and although their main site is down, the server which my account is on (and all of my sites) is up and running normally. I dont know exactly what is going on, but at this time atleast some of their sites are still functioning. Maybe some major server problems?
