It adds *usually* out dated software without recent bug or security fixes. Don't like it at all.

I agree with pixetech, its usually not up to date software, and am I mistaken or is it all freeware in the firstplace?

It's ok, it's a very good selling point and worth the money.

Yes sometimes a few of the programs are outdated and behind on a security patch or two, but if it wasn't there and your customers just installed what they wanted manually, how many of them keep those up to date anyway? hardly any.

Is there a Fantastico or similar solution for non Cpanel users?

I would like to offer my hosted customers on LINUX some kind of a solution which would let them install scripts.

It appears to keep the software quite updated.
I installed phpBB via Fantastico on my site.
The version it installed was one version old.
Next time I went into my Control Panel there was an "upgrade phpBB to 2.0.6" button which I did and the forums were upgraded.
Only recently there was an "upgrade to phpBB 2.0.6c" button which again updated my forums automatically.

I'm not saying these updates were available the same day as the patch/update was released but they do seem to get updated.

Surpass Hosting uses Scripta v1.1 instead of Fantastico, it seems easier for the end user and less bugs. I like it a lot better than Fantastico. I couldn't find any info about it on Google but Surpass replaced Fantastico with it in Cpanel.
Everyone is entitled to MY opinion.

and how can one get the scripta license?? i've seen it too in surpass, if it has less bugs and a better license price, i think it could make a boom like fantastico

I believe there is a simular app for Ensim...don't recall teh name off the top of my head.

Question for all you crapPanel hosts out there, how do you handle support issues for Fantastico? I'm sure that clients that use this (normally the dim witted ones who don't have a clue how to FTP and install a simple script) go running the the Host first for support. Do you simply redirect them to the scripts site? Or do you try to help them? My thinking is most hosts don't need the extra aggrevation. My policy has always been, if I didn't install it, I ain't supporting it. (of course that's offical stated policy, I have been known to jump in and help out on many occassions depending on workload, etc).

    Angry

Sean, what a great way to catagorize all the people who aren't very well versed in unix. sorry i don't know unix and may need fantastico or some other script installer, but i have a master in IS (that's information systems for all the dim-witted people sean is refering to) and am dba/.net programmer. as well i own a fulfillment software business...

i really hope you are not in ANY WAY a sales representative of CapitalWebhost.net. great way to alienate potential "new to unix" customers. your company must only offer hosting to Linus Torvalds and company.

Well, FTP isn't only for UNIX-based platforms . I believe IIS in Windows has an FTP server as well. However, I do agree that he shouldn't be calling people dim-witted.

OK, with all this talk of Fantastico, where do you get it? Not as a reseller, but as an end-user.
