    Server Naming:

Just interested how you keep track of your servers by name. I know alot of people just use

    Server1, Server2, Server3, Server4...
    Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta...

But does anyone here get more creative? Does it help in remembering the servers unique features?

We've just gone for planet names.

Some others I have heard people go for are names from shakespear plays, Animals, birds, cars, Pretty much anything there is a group of!

I have always just gone for boring, but descriptive names.

    For example: srv1, srv2, srv2, etc...

Most of the time this information is not revealed to the user, so I go for whatever would be easiest to remember for me.

It is much easier for me to be able to tell my staff that "srv1" is having a problem, than to tell them that "mooch" is, and have them know what I mean.

Whatever you feel most comfortable with is what you should choose, even though names like "mooch" may be quite a bit more fun.

Hehe... hmm, I've seen some creative ones over the years in a few NOC's - "BigDog", "Juggernaut", "Ferrari", etc.

But I could understand how this might lose its appeal if you have a cage of 50 1U servers. ("Srv042" might end up being a little easier to find!)

I named my own computers following simpsons characters I don't think that would look very good for servers though, it just doesn't seem professional.

cities/rivers are good ones to use. stars and galaxies.. mountains....

    professional shmoessional.

We got bored with Simpsons and now we use Futurama. Sometimes we even let clients pick which character the new server is going be named after.

One thing people forget is that being professional isn't all about acting like you've got a broom handle inserted where it doesn't belong. People don't 'act' professional. (except on WHT of course) They either are or they aren't, regardless of their server names. That's not to take a shot at you, but just to make the statement in general.

I'd use two words that start with the same letter like, and the second has to do with computer/server parts.

    "Attacking ATI"

    "Flashing Files"

    "Terrifing Tower"

    "Raging Rack"

    "Stealthy Server"

    etc

Well for our dns servers we went with simple DNS1 and DNS2.elitehosts.com

As for shared hosting server we started with movie characters:
    ace (ventura)
    morpheus (from the matrix)
    etc....

Dedicated/colo customers usually have their last names as the box name: sopher, moore, chapo etc...

Its nice to have a sense of humor. However, when we call our colo provider for a reboot, it's kind of wierd telling them to reboot "morpheus"

Same here. Greek gods all the way.

edit--The only thing I notice is that the servers which are "not the nice ones" tend to have more problems than the ones named after the so-called good gods....

We name our internal boxes after baseball teams. So far, customers have never complained about being hosted on "cubs" or "angels" but I imagine one day some crazed fan will complain!

To the poster who names servers after greek alpha-characters: Did you know that three letters which were used most commonly as numerals, and not so often in phonetics, have been dropped from the classical greek alphabet? These include DiGamma ϝ, San Ϻ, Qoppa Ϙ, and Sampi Ϡ. Just a little thing I learned during my fraternity days!

It looks like the WHT forum software butchered my HTML for the greek characters a bit ... Sorry about that!
