Manchester United ended Arsenal's Treble aspirations as Paul Scholes settled a combative FA Cup semi-final between the Premiership titans at Villa Park.
Scholes struck in the 32nd minute of a pulsating last four showdown to keep United's season alive after a fiery encounter in the Midlands.
The key selection decisions revolved around both teams' attacks as the injured Ruud van Nistelrooy was replaced by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer while Arsene Wenger gambled on the match sharpness of Jeremie Aliadiere, with Thierry Henry kept on the substitutes' bench.
The match was a complete contrast to last week's cagey Premiership affair at Highbury and Arsenal will wonder how they trailed at half time after creating a string of fine chances in the opening 45 minutes.
After just three minutes the holders could have been in front after Dennis Bergkamp nipped in ahead of the United defence to be denied firstly by Roy Carroll and then Wes Brown, who headed the Dutchman's shot off the line.
From the resulting corner, The Gunners again came agonisingly close with a superb Edu chip bouncing back off the crossbar to Kolo Toure whose header towards a beckoning goal was magnificently palmed away by Carroll.
United attempted to give as good as they got with the trickery of Cristiano Ronaldo on the right flank ensuring Arsenal's defence was never allowed to settle.
The best chances continued to fall The Gunners' way with a surging Sol Campbell run enabling Bergkamp to clip a delicate cross to the far post but Robert Pires headed over the crossbar with the goal at his mercy.
A Ryan Giggs ball into the area just evaded Ronaldo's head while Pires escaped with a yellow card when he flicked an arm into Gary Neville's face.
The Red Devils then had an escape of their own when a bouncing ball hit Mikael Silvestre's arm on the half hour but two minutes later they took the lead after a slick move.
Patrick Vieira was caught in possession before Neville threaded the ball into Giggs who squared for Scholes to unleash a rasping shot beyond a helpless Lehmann.

No treble for Arsenal as United out fought and out played the on form team of the season up to now. Also 2 injuries for Arsenal with Rayes out for 3 weeks with a thigh injury and Lungberg out of the Chelsea match at least with a fracture or broken bone in his hand.
Critic, UNITED! I'll just let my colour shine through for a minute.

Yea yea yeah....
We still got CL and PL. You can take the least of our worries.
Man Utd deserved it with their second half display but i felt the referee cheated us out of many things. He was on your side

Well deserved! Man U have the FA Cup. the other finalist aren't even in the Premier League!
I don't think Arsenal will win CL; I hope they beat Real though, and make the final.

Its Chelsea Vs Arsenal in the semi-final of the CL, so how are they expected to beat Real and make the final? If they get to play Real, they will play them in the final

jstyla, Arsenal had a lot of endeavour but today i don't think you had it in your and that is was going to happen for you. We played so much better today, defending as a team and fighting for eachother.
To say however that the ref was on our side is a bit rich, he didn't have a terribel game but you coul've easily had Lehman and Pires sent off on any other day, not to mention you retaining your title as the best or worst divers in the premiership depending on how you look at it with the cynical acts by Vierra and Bergkamp.
I would also like to condem the actions of the fan who threw the coin or object at the Arsenal physio, i don't know which side he was on but i hear he has been arrested.
This game could have a big impact on the rest of the season for the Gooners, the Champions league match on Tuesday will be a great match i have no doubt.
Sash!, Arsenal v Chelsea is a Quarter Final 2nd Leg tie, then they meet probably Real Madrid in the Semi Finals and then i reckon AC Milan in the final at the Shalke stadium, can't remembe the city that they play in..hmm
Oh and what's the catch? Liverpool fan wanting us to win?
Milan have looked awsome though and in the CL looked the best team so far in my view.

Just sick of Arsenal profiting from other teams playin badly and suffering from bad luck. Lets be honest, the only reason why they are top of the league is because Man U and Chelsea have had bad seasons with injuries and suspensions and little trickles of bad form. Otherwise Arsenal would have been 3rd in the league.
So thank god Man U won

It was a good match. We got it live downunder. Scholes made it look too easy.

It's only the quarter finals at the moment.

Yes it is purely the bad luck of every other team that they havent lost this season until today, in the league, fa cup and europe. Not to mention I'm sure having to play 4 games in 9 days has no effect on the team.

Here we go, now starts the whinging about the FA and the way they spread the games
Liverpool won the League Cup, FA Cup and UEFA Cup in 2001 as well as finishing 2nd in the league and that was all in one season with games all crushed together. I think at one point we played something like 4 games in 8 days including a UEFA Cup semi final.
And 2 seasons before that Man Utd won the league and the FA Cup and and the UEFA Champions League. Again, their games were all crammed together near the end, but they still worked their asses off in every game.
Its easy to fall back on an excuse like that. The fact is, the better team won (even without thier number 1 defender and two number 1 strikers).

I'm sure it's a contributing factor and I'm not making excuses for anyone. Utd deserved the win today, but to say Arsenal are only where they are because other teams have bad luck is the sort of trash I'd expect from the back page of the mail, about teams like Charlton and Fulham. It's no different than me saying United would be top if they had brought Ronaldinho in the summer and the Ferdinand incident had never happened. It's all part of football and Arsenal deserve the league position they have. For the record I support none of the teams you have mentioned in this thread.

It could be worse, they could be fourth in the premiership, not won anything other than mickey mouse cups in over a decade and have a manger with the man management skills of Jeffrey Dahmer, who has spent over a £100 million on pub team players.

The talk radio stations will be make a mint out of this result.
I thought it would end a draw, especially after the Ashley Cole clearance off of the line before Bridge got his goal.
As a Utd fan i have to say that if another manager in Europe had to be successful in Europe or whatever and it couldn't be us, you can't go wrong with Claudio Ranieri can you; Kenyon really looks like an idiot now though if he didn't already.
Did you see the interview with Ranieri after the game? I haven't heard him that happy with the media before, guess you can't blame him, just stuck up two finger at the board at Chelsea.
When Bridge scored, people round here were screaming like it was a United goal.
Bad luck Arsenal
Chelsea
On the merits of football, i think you have to hand it to Chelsea, they put together some very nice moves and Duff could've scored in the 1st half and they kept going until the final whistle. Fatigue might be telling with the gooners as well as mentally after the last two games so we'll have to see how they deal with things this weekend in the league.
