HostSave.com - 55389 websites hosted on one IP Address

I did a reverse IP lookup on a clients site. It stated that 55389 websites hosted on one IP Address.

Could that mean that is one server? Surely not.

If it's one IP then yes it's one server but they could easily just be parked domains.

I don't think the server could handle anything else in such numbers.

So, would the benefit of parking all your domains on one server be using forward framing to other servers?

As Loon said, they are probably all parked. But it must be a nightmare to manage httpd.conf on that server.

That's not exactly accurate, there could be a cluster of servers with load balancing that utilize a single shared IP address.

Wow thats too many websites for one server. But the servers could be networked and use a shared IP address. Or it could be a fowarding server.

Why would it be a nightmare for Apache, if it is to one IP then one virtualhost entry listening on the IP rather than hostname would resolve all domains to the parked page.

You can have domains parked all going to one-site without setting up httpd.conf for all domains.

Also its definatly a load balanced setup with BGP no doubt.

Personally, I'd attribute it to some sort of load balancing setup. I would find it hard to believe that they would blindly put that many hosts on one server, even if they were trying to oversell.

I don't like putting anything over 100 on a server, but that's just me

You can have one web site say: temp.com

and have 1,000's of domains setup with DNS somewhere having there A records poiting to temp.com's IP. You dont need to have them all setup on apache's httpd.conf

I'd like to know what site it is

Most likely it's either parking or a simple redirect server (like enom's)... in which case it could easily handle it.

Just curious what is the utility to find out how many sites an IP host?

    You could check whois.sc.

Well... we have a site at HostSave and guess what?

    a) It has that IP
    b) It loads fast and always has done

For me, that suggests the load balancing explanation.

If it was a single server with that many domains I suspect we might have noticed and moved sometime ago.

    Load balancing

Yes it can be a load balancer. Most likely.

    Greetings:

PC-based servers do have lower limits than mini-computer based servers.

We started as a reseller when we first got into the industry; back then Hiway Technologies used very high end Silicon Graphics servers capable of handling thousands of domains.

Whether thousands ran into double digit thousands, I don't know.

But some people who are in Europe who are familiar with 1and1 states they also host thousands (currently) per machine.

So, it would not surprise me that hostsave.com would do such.

    Thank you.
