A client of mine is having their web-site redesigned and is keen to have a Flash Intro to his site, as well as a small flash logo on his main page.
Does anyone have any idea of approximate costs to have about a 10 to 15 second Flash Intro made?
Also an approximate cost for a small flash logo?
I am not looking for a quote a this stage, just a rough guide as to what current market rates are for this type of work? Hopefully if it is reasonable, then will need to find a good designer that can do this.
Anyone know of any good flash designers out there that they would recommend?
Logo design, like anything else will vary widely depending upon several factors. Most often you get what you pay for. If you want a custom logo you will see quotes from 50.00 to 2500.00. Look at a designerís portfolio and ask yourself if their work justifies their pricing. Your customer will have to evaluate their budget and decide how much their company image is worth. You can get a stock logo from 10 - 200 dollars. You can take a look at non unique designs at designload.net or logoyes.com. It is hard to find the really good logo designers through a google search. Check the forums here for recommendations. You may also want to look at elance.com for price ideas (buyer beware).
Regarding the flash intro, I would recommend evaluating their visitor base and the type of site to make sure it's appropriate. Except for entertainment sites, intros have for the most part been abandoned by designers using common sense. In my experience and opinion, unless a visitor is at a site to be entertained they will just be annoyed by the barrier to the content and leave. The skip intro button is rarely used. It can also hinder search engines. I would give your client that information and let them make an informed decision from there. No recommendations on a designer for that. If it is just text done in swish I would think around a hundred dollars. A rich media intro done by 2advanced.com will cost thousands.
i don't know when people are trying to provide the highest costing company they think of, they always say 2advanced. in my opinion 2a is about mid field. i know many people MUCH more expensive.
as for cost, it all depends on hte developer. You might see one say a flash intro for $50 and another for $5000, but keep in mind they are not the same. Usually the higher the price the more work that is put in. This doesn't always equate to a better quality product, but usually it involves more revisions, more one on one meetings to discuss it, more research before just jumping right in....they might have the same hourly rate but be providing different service. If their hourly rate is $50/hr, the first would spend an hour on it (pretty hit and miss in regards to quality in this situation) and the other spends 100 hours doing research, concepts, comprehensive, prototypes, usability testing...you aren't paying for the final product but rather the process. the more indepth the process, the more targeted the product is to your client which in turn makes it more successful.
when you look around at prices, you will notice large discrepencies between different people and organizations. Keep in mind that they are quoting for the whole process of developing it and not the final product. that is why it is impossible to give you a reasonable quote for either. I know $5000 is reasonable for an introduction/corporate presentation because I have quoted it and higher on many projects. But you must provide that much more service to warrant the increased expense.

Not sure why I mentioned them? Because most people get an immediate picture of the type of work and costs associated with the name. I am not a huge fan of their designs but they are well known. They are good at what they do. I was simply trying to illustrate the wide variance of pricing and quality. If I had been able to think of a company doing swish intros for 100 dollars I would have mentioned them as well. Is your problem with people mentioning a well known company or with 2A themselves?
If you have an example of a company better known for producing expensive flash sites by all means mention them so I may have a better illustration. When people ask how much a site costs I will sometimes ask them if they want a yugo or a Rolls-Royce. I could mention a much pricier limited production model made by hand in Europe, but that would kill the illustration if I had to explain to the person what car I was comparing against the Yugo.
I think you have some great points on pricing and quality of work.
its not your illustration i am commenting on alone, but EVERYONE uses them as an example, almost as if no one costs more or does better. It's great for 2a (they are probably the best known web design studio, the nike of this industry) but people seem to think just being designed by 2a costs a lot just because they are 2a. It is because of the service they provide. They charge a reasonable rate, $50-100/hour, yet they work much more than most web development companies, hence the higher prices. on a project i did with them a while ago they spent two months simply getting a design laid out, not because they are slow but because they constantly redid it to ensure it was exactly how the client wanted it.
2a is a great example, but it is an example of great service rather than its common use as an example of overpricing. They are not more expensive than me; if i did the same amount of work that they did on a project i would quote similarly. but people seem to think that when they quote for a project they pick a number from 1 to 1000 and then add 3 0's to the end
I'm not sure if anyone else has stated this, but a lot of web designers just come up with their own price. One of my friends, charges differently for each product, but a lot of his customers are too easy to buy, so he usually gets a good deal. :-) Flash is a great thing to add to a website, but only if the designer knows what they are doing, otherwise it can just look bad. :-)
When i had my site designed i requested some flash. But in my personal opinion, after spending weeks looking through templates with all different types of flash, i decides the best flash on sites for businesess are simple, and not too long. I came accross one on templatemonster, it had a HUGE flash intro, with loud music showing all the different hosting packages. Sure initially looks nice, but its a bit excessive i reckon.
A really good flash intro, almost movie-like, will loosen you of somewhat 5k. Although you probably won't need such an intro, you could check some great works on the flash development sites. Many corporate sites use this kind of mindblowing animations as a good first impression.
A lot of web designers fluctuate their rates according to a client.
I know personally that my doing Flash-related work is much harder and time-consuming than web design work. Therefore, a designer can charge as much as $125 per hour (I have seen this done).
But, please be aware that this designer was very experienced, and not some junkie trying to scrounge an extra $500 bucks Make sure that the person that you hire knows how to do the job, and can do it effectively, as Flash is a difficult program to master.

I would like to take this opportunity to point out that design firms like 2AD and FI does work for very high profile clients. Their client has that kind of money to spend. Both firms did numerous sites for Ford Motor Company and thatís a multi billion dollar company. Look at it this way; they are a team, not 1 or 2 designer(s) working on a clientís site. They have a team of 10 to 30 professionals working on client project so if you think about it the prize is dame reasonable. They do this for a living so you know what your getting plus they guarantee top notch quality.
