1 dual xeon server or 2 P4 server?
I am hosting a big forum with over 1000 people online average.
Coz the site is becoming bigger & bigger, I am looking forward to upgrade my server. there are two solutions I am considering:
1, Use single server from EV1, one HDD dedicated for mysql:
Intel Dual Xeon 2.4 GHz Packages
2 GB RAM - (2) 73GB SCSI Hard Drives
DRAC card (unavailable on BSD systems)
1400 GB Monthly Transfer
2, Use 2 server from SM, one for Mysql, one for Apache:
- 2.8 GHz Pentium 4
- 80GB ATA 100 7200 RPM HDD
- 1024 MB Ram
- 1000 GB Bandwidth
Their cost are quite similar, I am wondering which one would perform better?
My forum is something like Vbulletin.
Much ThanksLast edited by v009; 03-31-2004 at 12:31 AM.

I personally am a fan of the SM network, and would suggest you go through a quality SM reseller to get a great discount on a server(s).
You can also get a similar price on a Xeon setup with SM to the one you are quoting from Ev1.

I agree with Felix. I am also a fan of SM's network, and would recommend using it.
I have had experience with both companies, and found that I was most satisfied with SM. That is just my experience, however.
If you search, you can find horror stories regarding both hosts.█ DreamHost Web Hosting

The 2 server setup should perform better!
If you have a lot of read/writes as is usually the case on a busy forum, I would suggest getting SCSI drives for both the systems.Fahd - Server Monitoring | Webhost Ranking

You post 5 messages, so that you can recieve PMs, and I'm sure you'll get PLENTY of offers. I know I sure as hell did when I was first looking for a server on WHT It's good though, it really helped me find what I was looking for.
If not, you could always look in the offers section directly, or ask for people to point you in the right direction right here. Which I guess is what you're doing.

SCSI processes MySQL way better than IDE, get SCSI if you could afford it.

i have a forum abour your size
and i have 2 p4s threw managed.com and love it
i have freebsd machines so that makes it that much better
i would go with p4s since you do have alot of write ands reads.
and you can give all the ram to mysql on one and all the ram to mmcache on the other

It seems that I can interconnect two servers at SM. That way I can get my own small LAN.
