Keeping emails
Just curious.... How long does everyone keep their emails for?
Personally, I have every email I have ever sent archived (from December 1997). My Eudora directory takes up about 250MB.Last edited by codywatkins; 03-30-2004 at 07:53 PM.

I keep them as long as they are necessary. If its account/login info etc It goes in the saved folder, If its a confirmation code that a forum or newsletter sends me I delete it. It all depends what the email really is Sometimes a good joke email will last along time. Until my box turns into a file cabinet then I go through an clean a bunch out.

I try to keep everything. This has converted over to keeping everything that's not spam.
Unfortunately, I lost a bunch due to IBM selling crappy hard drives.Jim Reardon - jim/amusive.com

Oh. My total size of mailboxes:
629 MB (659,739,670 bytes)
Someone REALLY needs to make a seperate archival system for mail... most mail progs themselves are very, very slow. A dedicated program for browsing mail 'archives' would be awesome.Jim Reardon - jim/amusive.com

198 Megs of current email (back thru mid 2001) everything older that I still have is in 3 diff. archive folders dating back to Nov. of 1997 when I first started saving (got online aug 1997)
I have backups from when I tried eudora for about 6 months
More from when I was stupid and used incredamail (you cannot convert these emails over to any other format from what I can see)
Even more that are Netscape (prolly 4.x version) emails
Looks to be around 900 megs in saved emails. All junk mail was discarded of course.
Though I just found out that I have all my icq logs dating back from 8/97. What good they will do me other than proving to someone that they indeed said something I don't know.
Oh wow, I got a bunch of old junk in this folder (off to rummage thru my findings)Happily hosting @ Dathorn.com (Since 3/2003), Ispeeds.net (Since 2004), & Quadspeedi.net (Since 7/2005)!

I've got ... (checking) 502 megs total of outlook pst goodness. The 'archiving' thing is the only reason I keep that program.
I wish there were a better way to keep the archives. If anyone knows a (preferrably) open standard that these can be archived in, let me know. I'm a packrat, and keep everything.
Spam gets tossed in the bitbucket, as does webhostingtalk.com and other forum thread notifications. If I didn't do that it'd be way bigger...Ion Web Services/TronicTech

Exactely why I have mine. I guess I should back all that crap up on dvdr now. Got it on various backup cds all around, time to cut down on the amount of media I have and just convert all backup stuff to dvd.
On that note, does anyone know of any good software that will let you backup straight to DVDR ? I have drive image pro 2002 and I love it. Backup straight to CDR usually but dvdr would be nicer and a bit less amount of discs.Happily hosting @ Dathorn.com (Since 3/2003), Ispeeds.net (Since 2004), & Quadspeedi.net (Since 7/2005)!

I can see deleting mail you read, but I think most people would at least keep their outbox for a long time (seeing as there's a lot less)

outbox? Sheesh. I send out a ton of email. I delete that crap about once a week (minus the important stuff)
