Bush wants cheap high-speed Internet access for all by 2007

ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico (Reuters) -- President Bush on Friday urged that affordable high-speed Internet access known as broadband be available to all Americans by 2007.

"We ought to have universal, affordable access to broadband technology by the year 2007," Bush said in a speech focusing mostly on homeownership. "And then we ought to make sure that as soon as possible thereafter consumers have plenty of choices..."

Telephone and cable television companies like Verizon Communications and Comcast Corp. have been competing fiercely to sign up customers to high-speed Internet service, which is seen as a lucrative market.

There is already a fund that subsidizes telephone service in rural areas and for those who cannot afford it. Policymakers have debated whether the Universal Service Fund should also subsidize Internet access to American homes.

They have also been debating what regulations should apply to broadband services. Telephone companies that dominate a market have to share their networks with rivals for telephone service and there have been extensive debates about whether those rules should apply to broadband.

Cable companies do not presently have to share their networks with rivals but some allow subscribers to have an alternative Internet service provider.

There were about 20.6 million homes and small businesses that subscribe to high-speed Internet as of June 2003, the latest data available from the Federal Communications Commission.

More consumers have signed up for the broadband from cable companies, with about 13.7 million lines compared to 7.7 million using telephone companies' digital subscriber line services.

Hrm, more taxes for us beauty, I really want the govt to just get OUT of telecom and let the market rule, and then there will be many companies that extend the market if they don't have to pay all of the fees that the govt makes them, and us pay.

Bush seems to forget that there are millions of unemployed - but his priorities are sending a man to Mars and high speed broadband.

Maybe GW should actually go out on the street someday and talk to real people, and not just his overpaid, uninformed advisors.

High speed internet access is really not on the top of the priority list for the millions of Americans who can't afford to feed their families.

When is he going to propose a bill to feed the needy?

It's really not much news of any kind. He didn't express any plan to make it happen, didn't say he was going to do anything, he just said "we ought to."

It's important to note that most of the invited crowd for the New Mexico speech were businesspeople in the homebuilding industry. Talk about wiring homes for broadband: guaranteed positive response.

I think high speed broadband for everyone would ignite the economy the same way building interstate highways did (thanks to FDR).

Personally, I say we should push gigabit connections for every household in the states. Imagine all that could be done with that type of infrastructure.

As for a man on mars and spending billions on it, i think that is a waste at the moment as we got bigger things to worry about.

lol, why is Bush coming up with this stuff. Whatever he plans to spend on this. Probably another 30 Billions dollars if he do decide to do something. Should be spent on Unemployment and poverty throughout the United States.

Plus, If everyone has High-Speed Internet, I can't brag about how fast my connection is to the people on dial up

No they shouldn't be worried about high speed internet or putting people on Mars. They should save there money, I'm sure Bush still has a few countries to invade. I mean there is still countries out there that don't bow and scrape to America, yes I know that is hard to believe but sadly it's true.

    insubordinate piddly little countries

Reporter:Mr. President, could you tell us more about this broadband thing?

Bush: Well, the only one I can think of right now are the Dixie Chicks.

Don't get me wrong, I would LOVE to have reliable non fixed wireless high speed internet around here. But why should my tax dollars pay for it when my monthly phone bill being deregulated could remain the same but fund the same expansion? I am a very limited government kind of person, the less government the better.

before the interstate highways states did not trade like they did after the highways. the roads created jobs, improved trade, and opened up many new opportunities. i learned this in basic us history. it is not a secret formula or something from an extremist publication. And I personally think high speed connections in every house could do the same thing for our country. It will also keep us in the front of the pack among other countries.

I got a sneaky suspicion that bush's highspeed access goal has a little something to do with the plan to implement "broadband over power lines" across the USA.

I can see it now, the hungry lined-up on the streets waiting for their first taste of Broadband since they don't have any at home.

Free Storage Space for personal websites should be next on his agenda, the poor will eat that up!

I take back what I said.
Maybe he is doing this to feed the poor.
Since most internet jobs are outsourced to other countries, and Bush is a fan of giving away American jobs, he could be more concerned with feeding the hungry in India than in Indiana.

This is not for the poor, it is for the middle working class which makes up the bulk of the nation. The poor do not drive or boost the economy.

What this will do for the poor is give jobs and that will put food on their plates. Jobs from the construction of the infrastructure to building all the new gadgets people will want so they can take advantage of the broadband.

    You guys need more vision!!!
