    Hello,

Hopefully the name cought your attention

I would like to know the various methods of pretecting a dedicated server from DDoS attacks. What is the best thing to get hold of?

Based on your post, I would say the best "thing" for you to get a hold of would be a "Server Admin".

A popular firewall called APF has some basic DDoS protection, its beta basically. Download the latest version and set ddos protection to 1 in the config file.

I was expecting you to say, my girl friend now has 3 baby servers, awwwww...

I suggest getting an Admin, and if possible (if you want to learn) see if they can tell you everything they fix, so you can research it, will help you a lot, and if it costs more then pay because it is worth it. Try get in contact with TheLinuxGuy, he knows his stuff...

get some thing like http://www.fliidguard.com which servermatrix.com use
install APF with antidos , install mod_dos for apache
try not to host sites which promote hate or stay away from IRC hosting
you can also install an internal or external firewall card/device
