    * Datacenter now what

Well I have a 1000+ sq ft datacenter redundant power and cooling.

I have a 3Mbps fiber on the way. What should be my next priority.
I'm picking up a few used but capable servers I hope to use for shared hosting. Should I focus on that? I was thinking of trying to sell a rack or 2 of co-lo to generate a little cash flow so that I won't have to rush setting up the other stuff? Any thoughts? I have extremely low overhead. What would be the best method to acquire some co-lo customers at low prices?

    3Mbps fiber?
Then I'd say first step is getting more bandwidth in there if you want to do colo. Where are you located?

Yep, unless your prices are amazing cheap or you are the only show in town, most people will not be satisfied with 3Mb/sec uplink.

Don't take this the wrong way, but these are all questions you should have answered before you got a datacenter and bandwidth.

I didn't get the datacenter just for this. I do network cosulting and it is partially for that use. I just have more space than I need and access to affordable fiber. I understand 3 Mbps won't be enough in the long run, but I'm a business man and am not obligating to too much money until I can generate a little revenue to cover it. I can fully cost justify everything except bandwidth without any hosting. I need to do some to support my consulting business so thought I would explore making some additional use of the space.

It is located in Lafayette, LA and is serviced by the local fiber network. I would post links to pictures of the datacenter and the fiber network page. Sadly I must post 5 time first. Apparently

When I try to PM it says I don't have permission to access the page. I wonder how many posts I need for that?

My domain is byteguru.net go to the images directory and look at the PIC_ files.

This should be #4. I have to wait a few more seconds. Seems you need 90 seconds between posts.

The racks and equipment are being moved out from previus tenent. Sorry! All I can say is an Oil Company that was consumed by a larger Oil Company. Thereby making it available to me at way below it's value.

Awsome! You better make good use out of it..

Is that carpet on those floor tiles?

If your looking for cheap equiptment why dont you try and buy some off the people leaving ?

Those are some decent cabinets and looks like some compaq servers there.

Yes, they apparently liked that ugly brown carpet. I tried to buy everything I could from them. They don't like to sell stuff, most of it is being relocated to other facilities.

If you are serious about it, you will also need to consider some form of fire protection. I don't recall seeing sprinklers (bad) or any other fire suppression. You will need to check with your local fire marshall or building inspector to make sure you are in compliance with local laws regarding data centers.

There is a Halon system. Look in the directory where the images were at the other PIC_ files.

On the floor, I doubt that would ruin the tiles but I'll definately check. I really think they just put those down for moving stuff to avoid scrathing the floor.

Yes, but as I said carpet will go. no more static. Non static materials don't get "contaminated".
