Why some hosts don't support Movable Type? Which blogging software do hosts prefer?

I was thinking about using Movable Type for a blog I have in mind, but I noticed that most hosts I come across don't support it. Why?

    To Hosts:
What blogging software do you feel safe about running on your servers?

we support movable type but prefer wordpress (php/mysql) for faster speed and greater flexibility.

    hope this helps

We welcome Movable Type, but there are occasional concerns with sites with especially active comment sections, and the resultant server processes spinning out of control. A multi-user blog with several different authors and / or incredibly frequent updates can cause additional server drain, due to the rebuilds.

For preference on the server? Whatever the user(s) are comfortable with, except for any blogging packages with known unpatched security vulnerabilities.

Right now, Movable Type is extremely popular in blogging circles. If there were a variety of blogging scripts, with a mix of driving technologies (some using CGI, some using PHP), that might possibly even things out.

    Thanks for your comments!

Are there any other hosts who have a personal preference when it comes to blogging software used on your servers?

Because it's easy to exploit and mass-flood, killing not only the script but probally also the server in the process.

Haven't had such an issue with Movable Type in these two years. Although exploits and mass comment flooding are known with Greymatter, haven't seen it much with MT.

We always recommend Movable Type or B2 to customers.

Netrilli, I think it depends on the popularity of the blog in question and how active the comments section is. I have several clients who use Movable Type as a CMS tool, rather than to create a "blog" site, so they don't use comments - and those particular installations are troublefree.

It must be like forums, in some respects: many web hosts talk of the horrors of this script or that script, but leaving aside those scripts with known exploitable security flaws, the real server loads hit when the forum has a huge, actively participating audience. Of course, you don't always know when a new client's equally new blog is going to turn out to be The Most Popular Destination On The Web, or what have you.

There's been lots of comment spammage with MT Blogs in the past year, though it seems to only constantly hit the so-called A Listers, to leverage the higher pageranks from those sites into correspondingly high pageranks for the payday loan people, or the casino gambling sites, or the porn archives (or whoever's spamming this week).

Which blogging software is more server friendly, Movable Type or B2?

Movable Type needs Perl, but B2 requirements are PHP4 and a MySQL database.

    Good to know

And of course, each installation is different. One customer may receive a single visit per day, while another a hundred or more.

I don't know for sure that your question can be answered, HostQuest.

Either Movable Type or B2 can be server-friendly on the same server configuration, if there isn't a whole lot of active comment threads on the blogs generated / powered by that application.

Can you possibly refine your question?

We've got clients with very popular MT blogs and we haven't noticed any problems at all (touch wood).

b2 is popular as well, and pmachine is also running on a number of blogs and is getting some very good reports.

Haven't tried wordpress personally myself, but I might just check that out this weekend.

pMachine free is another good choice. I was using that but upgraded to the new ExpressionEngine. I was running Moveable Type before pMachine nad I preffered pMachine.

    Thanks for your replys everybody!

I think I'll give B2 a test drive to see how it goes, just need to find a host with an auto-installer like Fantastico.

I don't know how I did it, but I posted the same post three times in a row here, think it's my provider causing this problem.

Yep, it's my internet provider, everything was moving at a snails pace so I hit the submit button three times in a row, but my internet connection is back up to speed.
