I think I have spotted a large online community who don't have a *good* forum to use. A few are popular but either use nasty ezboard crap or those expanding message things like on audiworld.com.
I have just bought a dedicated box at ServerMatrix and have way more bandwidth than I need and was thinking of ways to put it to use. Can you realistically make money running and invision/vbulletin/phpbb forum? Obviously this would be from ad revenue. Anyone got any ideas of how much based on user figures/clicks?
First your going to need a membership base in order to interest advertisers. So starting out, you will not make any money. There are soo many forums these days unless you have a truly niche market it could take years in order to have enough of a member base to entice advertisers to pay you enough to make a decent profit.

alot of teen mb are racking in the dough. It's amazing. Just setup a good forum that has alot of fans of the topic and you'll see the members and hits roll in. Most Mb's don't start using ads until they get really big. Somebody's gotta pay for that server.
But you can make money from forums. Just have to find a really good topic to base it on.
