Possibly this is a subject for another thread, but maybe this could assist people such as 'jaali' and myself. What did you consider when deciding whether to build your own servers, buy from a manufacturer like Dell that has an on-site part replacement, or buy from someone like Rackmountsetc where you either have to ship the server back or replace the hardware yourself. Basically what I am trying to determine is whether or not the extra cost for on-site hardware replacement is worth it with a company like Dell?

When Dell is offering good deals on their servers, take the deals and buy few extra spare units. Forget about spending extra on on-site service. In case you have a system down, just replace the bad unit with the standby spare unit. Ship the defective unit back to Dell for repair or replacement. This always works for me.
