building a rocksolid shared/reseller hosting structure
i wonder if someone has/thought of building something like the following:
3 servers setup of each VPN
1 mysql server
1 mail server
3 connection via VPN for fast communication and user logs into web.hissite.com for uploading files and mysql.hissite.com for mysql and mail.hissite.com for mail serving.
something like what h-sphere is having but over cpanel.
is that clustering ? or its something else

For an almost-seamless transition when one server fails, you might want to look at fake, and arp spoofer, that will allow one machine to take over the ip address of another machine. How about running 2 servers and having another "main" server. Each server has its own copy of the required data (web sites, databases, etc.) and whenever a change on one server occurs, have it replicate to the other servers. You might want to read up on how mysql replication can be used there.
I am not sure you can configure Cpanel to support a remote email server as yet. There's probably some hacking and custom coding involved if you want to do so (example accounts creation, deletion and more and what about the bandwidth logging, diskspace quotas etc) Not going to be the easiest thing to do if at all possible.
