    Arrow building an extreme system......

I'm going to build an extreme system but I am having difficulty finding out information. I have done a google search but no useful information was returned. I want to build something like this:

Dual 3.2 GHz Pentium 4 (800 MHz FSB)
    1 Gig PC4000 RAM
    4 x 120 GIG 7200 RPM

Now, is it possible ot have a dual Pentium 4 3.2 GHz, everytime I see a dual P4 it is always a 2.4 GHz Xeon. Will I need an Xeon? I just want a Dual P4, PC4000, 800 FSB compatible motherboard, but I have yet to find anything

Can anyone give me the model number of a motherboard that would be compatible with the above?

Also would it be possible to build a triple
    (3 x 3.2 GHz P4) with 800 FSB, and PC4000 compatibility.

    Any advice or comments needed

I suggest AMD not Pentium, although you would have to go about building it differently to what's compatible. Through my experience, AMD is a lot more stable, faster and more efficient than a Pentium.

i think your 1 GB of ram is not extreme
why not add more ram. its always good to add more
about AMD and Intel think about HEAT and i think so far AMD new chips make less heat plus it all depand on what will you be running

Why not just go to the real extereme and build a cluster with a powerful front end. Of course start thinking big bucks

Do you really need 4 HDD's (and that much storage)? I would personally use 2x 200Gb drives.

With all the replies, surprising no one has mentioned yet...

Dual Pentium 4s do not exist, which is why you won't be able to find a Dual Pentium 4 motherboard. Dual Xeons are not made for gaming, and you will find better performance going with the top of the line Pentium 4 (P4 3.4ghz) for games.

Depends on his job, kids / family, things such as games, documents he wishes to store virtually and so on. He may also develop software, videos and so on, so it may well be necessary.

AMD - I'm not sure the fastest out yet, mine is something like 2.6 clocked to 3.2, check out http://www.amd.com/us-en/ for more information on their chips.

erm theres the MP which can be for home use. hats kinda oldish now though...and dual processors wont do you much good for playing games..

AMD Athlon FX51 is currently the best AMD chip for desktop use...if you want to look at a number cruncher you will need to go for an opteron.

    Bt the way..AMD Athlon FX51 isn't cheap :-D

Does the AMD 64 support 32-bit programs though?

    i dont play games

I do video editing, image manipulation etc. so the dual will help.

Now for the big one, can you get DUAL FX51?

    I don't think so.

If you want raw power go for a dual opteron.

the FX51 is more of a desktop chip.

You are not going to need more than a gig of ram.
Also, one opteron should be enough.
    Whats your price range anyway?

If you want a super system, get more RAM and SCSI drives not IDE .

A 10K SATA Raid is just as fast and MUCH cheaper.

AMD = lots of heat = lots of noise = instability.

I used AMD for years. Switched to an ASUS P4 system and never had a single crash, the box runs cool and QUIET.

vengeful, I can assure you my system was an Athlon 2800+
Had a nice time frying eggs with it and keeping my cat awake with its fans & copper heatsink.

    Bub,
A dual box will only give you a boost if the progams you use are dual enabled, such a Adobe Premier and Lightwave, 3D Studio Max Etc.

Dual RAID 0 will definately give you a boost in Video Editing with SATA, so that is a no brainer.

But determining the best CPU will depend on the exact programs you use, so please share more info.

    Dual Opteron Processors
    1GB of DDR ram
    (3) 74GB 10k Raptor-SATA (RAID 5)

more than enough... you don't need more than 1GB of ram, but if you want 2GB or 4GB then get it.

Strange, Currently I use an SLK-800 and a Smart Fan 2 with my AMD T-Bred 2100 (2500 RPM) at 46.8c full load 24/7 (I use F-A-D) My system is pretty noisy right now but that is going to be fixed tonight after I replace the current intake fans with two Vantec stealths. I have 2 rear fans, two front fans and two hard drives. When I tested it without the so-called "super quiet" fans I bought when I built the machine it was almost unheard. After I applied the hot fix and repaired my corrupt video drivers I haven't had a single crash and it's not very slow either.

The new AMD chips come with a heatspreader to help cope with the heat.
