Take it just as another data point since I am not really arguing with this but....
Setup - ghetto client, ghetto colo (think cabinet next to these three at 85 with just one router.) 3 Cabinets, each one 1 4U, 2U, the rest 35-38 supermicro cases, generic p3 with generic fans. It had been up 24x7 for 7 month, nothing failed.

if i put 40 1U servers in a 42U rack, work fine or produce a lot of hot and hang/kill/reboot/make crazy/burn the servers?
it will depend on your datacentre, their aircon quality, the flow of air through your rack, if you have fans in the roof to cycle the air faster, plenty of rear sace for the exhasut fume and a whole lot of other factors
IME it is *rare* to get more than 30 machines to a rack without hitting space, power, cabling, heat restrictions
also remember you dont just stuff a rack full of servers, you need switches, power units, possible a kvm drawer, a coule of u at the bottome to pull cables up through, apc reboot units etc.
