Satellite Internet Connection? Your few cents please...
During my bi-anual visits to India, its always refreshing and a great joy to meet family and give my social life much needed boost.
However, when time for work comes, I feel like a retard struggling with the 2-3kb/sec internet connection that likes any sort of stability. Even broadband is not much better; if not worst at times.
Recently one of my friends suggested exploring satellite internet connection. I did some preliminary research on it on google but still few doubts linger in my head such as what kind of bandwidth I can expect, what factors may influence that, what kind of price I am generally looking at.
Would be a delight to hear from few who have actually experience satellite internet.
I work with a guy who is a DishNetwork/Starband dealer, there are some amazing products coming out soon, but here is the current lineup.
512/512kbps with 400-600ns ping is their standard deal.
The equip is $700 if you buy it up front, then your monthly fee is $50-60, or you can do $90-100/mo with less up front.
The new stuff they have coming out is 3mbps and 20mbps speeds, targeted at small and medium sized businesses. Latencies are getting down to the 300-400 range. (Currently around 5-600ns)
Databahn is also a solution, but they are US only for now, and will be coming out in may/june. They'll have their Mobile T1 via Satelite (1.5 up/down) that is meant for RV's, vans, yachts etc. Its pretty cool!
The only problem with sat is the coverage, I don't yet know of a single provider covering the globe, even with partnerships. DirectWay and StarBand, and the commercial provider ConnexStar all are the "major players" but only cover north america. From what I have seen Gilat out of israel would probably be the most likely company to provide worldwide coverage, and they are the owners of Connexstar.
My understanding is that it is very prone to weather. My Fiancee in Brazil has it and it is always dropping out in Wet Weather. I would sooner a reliable slow service than a faster service that is problamatic.
