UK Web Hosting for USA company?

I have obtained a UK based domain name for a web site that will be covering UK related products. The domain name is of the *.co.uk variety. GoDaddy is the registrar.

Do I have to host the domain with a UK based web host? If so, what's a good inexpensive one, about the level of quality and cost of LunarPages (who we use and like for one of our American *.com domains).

If we can host the UK domain in the USA, are there any possible liabilities when it comes to Google or other search engines? For example, will they penalize us, SEO wise, for having a UK domain name that is hosted in the USA? (If the answer to the first question above is "no you don't have to be hosted in the UK").

    Anything else I should know?

    Thanks.

If you have registered the domain then you should by the terms of the .uk domain be either based in the UK or have some entity in the UK such as an office etc...

There are no restrictions on where you actually host the domain name. Host it at LunarPages

In terms of search engines, if you are looking for uk-specific hits (eg from people who search for "pages from uk only" in Google) then not hosting the domain on a UK IP address will seriously affect your search engine placement.

Lots of good UK hosts with UK-based servers here, do a search.

www.Supanames.co.uk are the number one hosting site in the uk hosting for the likes of mc donnalds and other big corporations... I'am also hosted with them and they are extreamly cheap for the hostage package they give... But I would emagine since your currency is the dollar it will not be cheap for you as you can nearly get 2 dollars for 1 pound meaning you will be paying just less then double for what it will cost back in the states.

That's a good question to post at http://highrankings.com/forum
Most people there are professional SEOs and Jill, the owner, speaks at conferences and such... They should know something about it or could give you an educated opinion at least.
    Good luck!

google for example uses the doamin extension and the location of the LIR allocation of the IP to determine whether to include a site in a country based index

    so ...
having a*.uk domain will enable you to be included
having your domain hosted on a uk IP block (rather than a uk host *claiming* to be in the uk) will enable you to be included.

putting your site as close to it's target audience is *always* a good idea, less hops, less places to have routing issues, less problems, faster speeds. due to the distance uk-us for example all we requests will take another 70ms at least to do the round-trip.

of course it cant therefore hurt to get the best of all worlds - host a .uk with a uk based host, and on a uk IP - will give you the best performance.

similarly hosting a .ie. with and irish host, in ireland, on an eireland IP if your target audience are all guiness drinkers in Cork etc ...

In our experience with google, it's definitely the location of the IP address that matters, the domain extension does not appear to matter at all. This has been very marked for us.

Yeah Right ... keep taking the medication,
looks like care-in-the-community has let another bunch out ...

    http://uptime.netcraft.com/up/graph?...anetwork.co.uk
supa are on a block of uk2 IP addresses, at least their *upstream" provider can lay some claim to being the largest, supanames either colo's with uk2 or has dedicated box(es), as they dont even have a ripe entry of their own (even small) subnet.

this claim they have mcdonalds as a client ... think again ..
    http://uptime.netcraft.com/up/graph?...cdonalds.co.uk
mcdonalds is hosted by someone with a pipex/uunet/gx/whatever they call themselves this week IP

if you're going to spout b*ll*x at least make it believable ...
