When does extra RAM helps?
Well, little question for your guys
To my knowledge, linux always make use of all the RAM avalaible as disk cache
So, when exactly does the machine starts swapping?
Would adding 512Mb helps?
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 494 463 30 0 33 294
-/+ buffers/cache: 135 359
Swap: 996 246 749
Wow, I would definately add 512MB.
You do NOT want your server to have to use the swap. If that is the case, the server will start to become very laggy and requests will be handled much slower.
Aren't only 135Mb being really used? 359 for the disk cache
Why is it swapping if it's not fully using the RAM?
The truth is, most servers will use swap, regardless how much memory you put in, from my own personal experiences. However you don't want your server using to much swap, anything over 3-5% definately time for a memory upgrade.
