Advice Needed: Hosting & Domain
Heya all, I'm new to this forum and was browsing around trying to get some advice as I'm looking to move to a new hosting company and also transfer my domain name.
As for the domain, I'm either deciding between godaddy or namecheap. So a comment or a suggestion on these two would appreciated. (I live in Australia, so those problems that some asian customers have been having with godaddy blocking their country shouldn't be an issue for me?)
As for the hosting, I've looked around ALOT, and emailed ALOT of hosts, rating them on support and the actual answers to my questions. I've found heaps and heaps of catches with some nice looking deals, and pretty much down to one host now.
BlueHost
1 GB Space
50 GB Bandwidth/Mo
1,000 POP Email Accounts
5 Add-on Domains
20 Subdomains
20 Parked Domains
10 MySQL Databases
+ the usual
I'm looking at a year plan for my new host, and Bluehost's year plan is $7.95/mo, which includes a free domain name.
I'd appreciate some feedback, advice and/or a better host suggestion. (Please don't plug your own company, saying you recommend it )
Also my site is Clouds DBZ, which is just like a hobby kinda thing I started for fun. I have no idea how much bandwidth I use currently as a friend is hosting me and he just said don't worry about it. Why do I wanna move? Cause the lack of features I'm currently getting, such as no cpanel, subs etc. I get around 2,000-4,000 unique visitors a day, so how much bandwidth would I need? (I also plan to add forums, image gallery etc after I move hosts).
Thanks in advance for any replies/suggestions.

$7.95 for 50gb transfer is just too cheap unless you own the data center and I'm pretty sure that host doesn't.
They won the best new host in 2003 and even link to a page describing that. Yet their About Us page says they've been in business since 1996. A simple whois check shows that the domain has not been registered since 1996. They could have been doing business under another name but if that was the case, why not mention that on the site. I'd hate our prospective clients to find glaring discrepancies in less than 5 seconds.██ Laurence Flynn @ HostNEXUS.com

my 2 cents
thats alot of bang for the buck. However I've never heard of that company. I'm sure if you stick around here someone can probably offer you a deal like that. And there are several veterans here that I'm sure could offer you better support. On the domain I prefer godaddy over namecheap for 2 reasons.
1.I'm biased as I like/use godaddy but the more important one
2.Godaddy has been around longer, seems to have more happy users, is icann registered while I believe the other is a reseller.
ok guess thats more than 2Well you did know kiwi's have more vitamin C than oranges....right??

Here's some info I recieved from them when I asked about there hardware, connections etc.
"We have a 30megbit connection to the backbone of the internet. Located in a Datacenter with 24/7 Dieslel genrated backup system. Our Hardware runs off of Dual Xeon Procecessors and our webservers are spanned accross 15 Seperate Servers and Network Attached Storage devices. Also I feel we are the only host out there that will provide toll free support over the phone where you will actually get a live person within the first few minutes."

Do they offer a 30 day money back policy? If so, test drive them for the 30 days and then see how they did. If they offer it it should be on the site somewhere, in their TOS/AUP maybe?
000domains.com is what I have used for a registrar for about 3 years now. Been happy with them for that amount of time as well.

I would not take its just too cheap (apx $0.16 per gb BW)
But if you do take it cause its cheap ...
then we will see you back here a few weeks/months trashing them(the host) for not being able to _____ or do this ______
when you know ahead of time 50GB for $7.95 = somethings wrong
The stove will burn the baby but some still have to touch it anyway just to see if its really hot
Theres plenty of good quality hosts here at WHT

Yea, I did ask them about 30 Day-Money Back and they said they offer it. It's quite strange how everyone here has been saying like "when you know ahead of time 50GB for $7.95 = somethings wrong" when theres HEAPS of hosts that offer 50GB+ Band for a simular price.
I also said it's $7.95/mo on a year plan, 1 month is like $12 + $30 setup or something.
For some other examples of cheap hosts will large amounts of space/bandwidth are bellow:
www.bluehost.com
12 Month Plan - $7.95 /mo
1 Gb Space
50 Gb Bandwidth
www.lypha.com
12 Month Plan - $8.95 /mo
1 Gb Space
100 Gb Bandwidth
www.lunarpages.com
12 Month Plan - $7.95 /mo
800 MB Space
40 Gb Bandwidth
www.hostrocket.com
12 Month Plan - $11.95 /mo
1 Gb Space
50 Gb Bandwidth
www.ipowerweb.com
12 Month Plan - $7.95 /mo
800 MB Space
40 Gb Bandwidth
www.midphase.com
12 Month Plan - $7.95 /mo
1.5 Gb Space
50 Gb Bandwidth
Just because if you own your own server/company and can't complete with these big boys, doesn't mean you should knock them just because you think something their plans "seem" too good. Hosting these days has become very competitive and everyday it seems you can get more "bang for your buck."
Anyways, so it looks like no one here has a personal experience with bluehost, well if thats so, can anyone recommend any of the hosts above and why? (And if your hosted by them, ur URL)
Thanks.

I would say either go with hostrocket, or lunarpages. This is because they have a very good reputation on these forums.

Did you try to use the search feature? http://www.webhostingtalk.com/search.php?s=
findmyhosting.com and webhostingratings.com could also help you find more reviews about those companies.
Try to visit the support forums of the hosts too (if they have one) and see what their customers feel about them, how they handle problems etc.
Good luck!Last edited by ldcdc; 03-17-2004 at 07:18 PM.

Just a few suggestions:
1. Try your new host for a few months before committing to a 1-year plan. Also be careful of setup fees, since these are often not covered by money back guarantees.
2. Look for feedback at places like webhostingratings.com, which ldcdc suggested above. This should give you a basic idea as to how customers feel about the company.
3. Consider raising your budget or lowering your space/bandwidth expectations. There's a reason people are skeptical of hosts who advertise $7.95 for 50 GB, etc., and it's not jealousy.
People are trying to give you good advice... don't just ignore it.
Anyway, good luck with your host.

Ok thanks, yea I know, but my site is just for fun, it isn't a business and the max I would pay is $10/mo. Also due to the large amount of traffic to my site and what I'm planning to expand, I think anything under 40 GB wouldn't be enough. Can any1 comment of any of the sites above from personal experience? Either saying if they're good..or eh not so good.

Hmm,
I got two hosting blocks from bluehost for myself and for my brothers business.
Both sites have now been down for 24hrs and they have also used my brothers card details to register an amateur porn site in the US. When I contacted them about this(on several occasions) they have declined to even acknowledge me.
Excellent, first class service I would recommend to anyone who has undergone a full lobotomy.

Recommendation
I changed to Bluehost for 2 sites one for myself and one for my brothers business.
The sites have both been down for 24 hours now cannot receive mails either or access the control panel.
Also upon registering with them they decided in their infinite wisdom to use my brothers credit card details without permission to register a domain for an amateur porn site based in the US.
Although I have contacted them on several occasions to ask them what is going on, they have very efficiently completely ignored me.
They do provide an excellent service if you happen to enjoy being treated like dirt, ignored and transformed into Larry Flynnt overnight.

well, you had a review for bluehost...
from your list as many others said lunarpages.. you might also like to have a look at hostgator.com and realwebhost.net..
And some personal suggestions:
To avoid future confusions prefer keeping your domain name comapny seperate from hosting (or stay away from free domain offer)
Do search and read reviews at WHT before you order hosting...
And if you doubt a company don't pay yearly..
