Mac OS X vs. Linux

I know this same question may have been asked before, but the search page didn't spit anything out so I thought I would ask anyway

Right now I am running Fedora on all my computers, and I am going to buy a G4 within a few days second hand. Now, it will be running OS X which is built on UNIX, so that is great in my eyes

Now, I am mainly getting it to learn how ropes with Macs aswell, but I would like to know what you guys prefer when it comes to choosing whether Linux or a Mac is right for the job.

I'm just not sure whether I should make it my main computer or still use linux and keep the Mac as a seperate comp just for learning.

I know this is a broad question, so I will narrow it down a little. Basically I use my desktop PC(s) for email, web browsing, video editing etc, just general stuff.

Any thoughts?

OS X gives you the best of both worlds ... Unix env and the ability to buy and run mainstream software.

That's how I was thinking, but for some reason I don't want to leave Linux behind and just become another Mac user. I know that sounds silly, but Linux gives me a nice feeling......like i'm some sort of IT God

If i had the choice and didn't actually have to shell out for overpriced hardware i would choose OSX. Its years ahead of Linux, plain and simple.

MAC OS, in terms of its user interface is just slightly inferior.

OS X user interface inferior? You are joking? It has to be one of the most thought out and user friendly GUI's going.

Linux is far too complicated for a joe bloggs user in comparison, with Windows sitting somewhere in between.

Also what I was thinking I wont be paying much for the G4, maybe $500 AUS.....including OS X and all the software.....seems to be a good deal...

I won't be dumping Linux any time soon though (I think)

Here is a similar yet different question. Tell me...what can Linux do better than Mac OS X can (excluding the fact that it is free). What I mean is, what would be a reason for keeping Linux over Mac OSX?

Sorry, but I have to disagree with you, Mac OS has a great GUI, while the Linux GUI isn't THAT great.......I think of the Linux GUI as more of an 'addon' than part of the OS (well technically it is)

Mac OS X is probably actually better suited as a server... it's based off BSD UNIX which historically has a far better TCP/IP stack than any Linux distribution, and is more secure. But the price for Apple's proprietary hardware... pff.

Regardless, I want an über dual G5.

Heh, here you go. Unfortunatly I did not use OSX so i can not do any objective comparison. I find linux desktop very simple and easy to use for average user, but if you are power user then your options are almost unlimited. If you want some feature and that feature makes some sense then chances are you can get a team of developers make it happen for you.

For people who say linux is hard one question I have is what is so hard in the folowing picture?

Quit spreading mindless fud. In 1992, the tcp stack was better then linux's. Well it is now 2004 and the 2.6 kernel out performs and out scales any BSD kernel plus it supports way more hardware then BSD.
