I need a recommendation of a quality shared hosting provider, preferably that caters to professional developers.
I need the following:
* Intel hardware
* Linux / Unix
* Up to date version of PHP, installed as a module
I need an emphasis on quality and good support more than a quantity of space, bandwidth, or other resources. A host that is flexible about adapting the PHP / Apache configurations would be especially good.
I'm looking in the $5-10 / month range.
Don't waste my time recommending a service that you haven't used for a significant period of time. Recommendations from professional developers especially appreciated.

Ultramatrix: more is better, but honestly, not that much. I could get by with, say, 20MB / 1GB
The last $4.95 / month host I had gave me 250MB / 1GB, but it didn't work out for other reasons.
Hoobastank68: The problem with all of those things is they don't come with any real recommendation. I need to hear from people that have actually used a hosting service that it is any good. Good hosting has been very hard to find in my experience.
domainwala: Because I don't want a service with AMD or other hardware powering their servers.
domainwala: It matters at least as much for server purposes as for any other purposes, right? I just have more confidence in Intel processors. I wouldn't buy an AMD for my desktop and I don't want my website hosted with one. It's a quality issue.
No offense JMM, but what you are looking for most of the quality hosts would be hesitant to provide for you on a shared environment.
My suggestion would be to grab a small VPS at ServInt (or other quality provider). Then you could configure PHP and Apache anyway you like as well as have full SSH/root access. It would cost you a bit more to go that route but it would easily surpass all your requirements and give you full and total access.
None taken, but I disagree. I have never used a hosting provider that refused me shell access. I have been refused Apache / PHP modifications by lazy or ignorant providers, but I do agree that, unfortunately, it would be hard to find a host willing to make those changes in my stated price range. Of course, if they had a decent configuration in the first place, I wouldn't want them to change anything, but a lot of providers seem to prefer a minimalist setup. Why do people think PHP and Apache modules exist . . . to dream about?
I really don't need root access and as you mentioned a VPS solution would cost more than a shared hosting account, out of my $5-10 / month price range. ServInt's lowest cost VPS is $49 / month.
Webmasters.com is the best shared hosting provider I have used. They meet all of the specs above (they are giving Database away free with their $10 professional account) except Shell access. But they do have a powerfull control panel that allows you to do most of what you can do in the shell (chmod, move files, edit .http_access etc). They seem to have a powerfull setup that you may not need to change. Check them out at least.
I've had an account with them for about 4 months now. No complaints.
