How can places offer Win2k3server for only $12/month?

I was wondereing how places like: http://www.servercentral.net/services/dedicated.php and servermatrix can offer windows server 2003 for only 12/ month or for free (SM)! Is there a way to get around the $800 cost of the software?

    Thanks.

It is possible that they purchase a blanket license to install Windows 2003 on X number of machines. These usually comes at a discount then they factor the cost partly through the setup charges and partly from the monthly fees.

You will indeed need to commit a huge sum for this to happen.

There is such thing as a Services Provider License Agreement http://www.microsoft.com/serviceprov...nsing/spla.asp which allows them just that.

    MS SPLA

    Hello,

We are indeed a Microsoft SPLA Partner. We announced our membership in this program on January 23, 2004 in a press release (which is posted on our web site under the News section).

    Thank you for your consideration.

Is there anyway to become a partner for a small volume of licenses or for even a single license?

or is there anyone who can supply a license at a discount monthly price?

You can apply your self, with a low monthly commit they will charge you a bit more, around $25-45/mo per 2003 License, which isnt that bad. When your company grows and gets more licenses your overall cost will drop.

If you have a SQL Server running, the license is per CPU (when using it for web-hosting).

    Hello,

Some of the postings above are not entirely accurate. Microsoft has two ways to license the software: processor licensing (PL), and subscriber access licensing (SAL).

Information on each model and their differences is readily available on Google; suffice it to say in most cases the SAL model is appropriate for web hosting customers.

To answer your specific question above, MS SQL is licensed separately from the OS.

where would i apply for one of those?

and also what are some of the unlisted differences between standard edition and web - i heard something about SQL.

and finally, why is this so cheap: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...category=11229

there are lots of deals of that exact package going around from multiple sellers, i wonder if it is a common bundel
