Help - High Server load on VPS...

I have a VPS .. suddenly it shows high serverload... I can't even SSH..putty closes it self... and when i try to acces whm it takes ages to open a page...

I tried shuting down all the services (httpd, exim, ftpd...etc..) still it shows high serverload...

i can not see many procesos running (SSH)...

any idea why? I am not sure how VDS differs from a dedicated server...

Is it being DOS'ed or something? Contact your provider..idk how server load can be high even after you shut all services..probably sounds like some kind of attack, abuse of service ( your clients ) or problem with the server ( your host).

I am not a VPS person but I do believe your server load is yours and yours only. Something on your end has to be causing it as I believe everyone is on their own partition and if someone screws up their end it doesn't affect anyone else on the server. Did you try contacting your provider for assistance?

yeah their reply was ..

There might be a problem with one of the other clients that's eating up the cpu. i will forward this onto our VDS admin to take a look at
============================================

When i check for CPU info in WHM it shows 1000Mhz and 512Mb of ram... Is this 1000Mhz is for my VDS or its shared?.. - Is there anybody knows about VDS?

Your VPS should not be affected from what other clients do on the server, there are a few exceptions though...but you definately need to ask them to provide a detailed explanation.

I don't know what software your VPS is running in (Virtuozzo, UML, etc) but I am afraid to suspect that it is showing full server stats. In a sense everything is shared. The guarantees are only relevant if the provider doesn't overpack the servers. We run a large VPS farm and we've seen all sorts of things happen. They're probably right, someone else is eating all the CPU, but when configured properly this wouldn't happen. Another thing that could be happening is that someone is doing alot of disk IO while bursting the RAM into swap territory--the act of swapping the processes in and out combined with heavy IO usage can again cripple an underpowered or oversaturated server. With so little to go on it is hard to say what is really happening.

If this is a usual WHM/CPanel VDS, everything what is going on on the other VDS is affecting your performance. Because you are using common resources. 512 RAM is the entire DS RAM, not yours, the Memory Used is showing also the entire RAM usage, not yours, the same with the disk usage.

I've been several months on such VDS and the server went every second day down, not because of my sites. You have to contact your provider, or move to a genuine VPS like the one ServInt or Dinix are offering.

they are using Virtuozzo ..i asked the same question with vds providers (about the CPU speed and the memory) they said its shared

I am paying $60 for 10GB space VDS with WHM/Cpanel - is it reasonable?

They said they will move me to a new server..

For that money one can always have a dedicated server. Your host must be adding much value in terms of management and securing.

This sounds like one of the fdcserver Virtual servers from the specs and if so its Virtuozzo. The load reported should be for your VPS. Anything intresting in top?
