    What bank do you use?

Washington Mutual has pissed me off. So far this month they have processed an unsigned check and when I paid someone and they cashed the check they paid them the wrong amount (same amount appears on my online banking -- so basically they modified the check without my permission)

Needless to say I need a new bank.

National City has been good to us. Not sure if that is a nation-wide bank though.

I've been happy with US Bank, not sure where they're all located though.

Contrary to the advertising, PNC Bank is VERY unfriendly to small business. They have the strictest loan requirements, and just plain make it hard for you to business with them. They want the million dollar revenue businesses, not the startup $50k revenue businesses.

Keep in mind that whatever bank you choose now, you will be starting to build a long term relationship with them, and most likely it will be the same bank you attempt to obtain a business loan from in the future.

Choose wisely, and not just based on who is the cheapest now for a small business checking account.
    Think ahead.

Commerce Bank, they are a NJ/PA/DE/NY bank, however they are expanding fast.

They have free checking accounts for personal/business usage. $100 minimum balance for personal, $1000 minimum balance for business. Both go into effect after a year, they really cater to small business, and have great hours

I use Wells Fargo for my business. They are starting to be more Small Business oriented, and I have heard that it is pretty easy to get 100g's for a startup loan.

As for personal banking, Northwest Airlines Federal Credit Union. I will only bank at a Credit Union for my personal finances. I'm also tempted to move my Business account there, but Wells fargo is treating me very nice (almost as nice as NWAFCU)

I use BizSmart in Canada (division of CIBC), unfortunately they aren't taking new clients now .. my monthly bank charges from them are basically $0 .. No Fee Business Banking.

Anyone looking for a similar deal in Canada should look to President's Choice Banking at Superstore's, it is CIBC backed as well and I believe they still have a small business package available.

We use BankOne for our business banking. No major problems and no fees to speak of (except for wire transfers). However, we keep a fairly substantial amount of money on hand at all times, so even if they have monthly minimums, we have always exceeded them.

I use the Toronto Dominion/Canada Trust Bank (TD Canada Trust) up here in Canada. They are not the cheapest around in terms of rates, but they're quick, efficient, and very easy to work with. And the main thing is that they're attitude is that they work for you, not the other way around. That's the deciding thing for me.

For the people in the US, I believe they have offices in Detroit, New York, and Washington. They also have an office in London, I believe. I'm not sure there, going on my memory.

    Amish Geek,

Where have you heard that it's pretty easy to get 100 g's from Wells Fargo? My experience has been the exact opposite. Wells has been the _hardest_ credit lending bank in the country, IMHO. I've done business with A LOT, and I mean A LOT, of lenders/banks, and there has definitely been others that have been much easier for me. Ironically though, Wells has been the easiest for tiny (I like to call them "micro") loans, like $5-$10k. They give those out like candy! (I really hope no one at Wells Fargo is reading this post.)

It's worth pointing out that the biggest factor in getting a loan is not necessarily the bank that you are applying at - but the nature of the business and its financial position, as well as that of the principals.

If you have a well established business with a documented financial history and some assets/personal net worth as collateral, getting a loan is not a very arduous process. The more you have, the easier it is to obtain additional financing for ever-larger amounts.

Now, if you are a startup business, your business plan and personal assets are going to play a key role in obtaining financing. You may also want to look into some governement-subsidized loan packages as an option.

I used to use Everbank.com (online bank in NY). They were nice but it became too much of a hassle mailing in checks.

I switched to PNC Bank (I am in Pittsburgh, PA) and they are open to 7 PM for me.

I was also assigned a business banking specialist who always answers her phone (and calls me occasionally to make sure everything is ok).

I never tried getting a loan from them, no need to, but I have found customer service great.

I have also used National City and thought they were pretty good as well.

I love Washington Mutual, they have been great to me. But your experience may be due to thier rapid growth.

I will never bank with BofA or Wells Fargo again, they were terrible to deal with here in CA, I could tell you horror stories, especially when Wells froze my account for no reason, bounced 82 checks (I had the money in the account) and never apologized. In the end, they could not tell me why they froze the account, and I paid a ton of cash in bounced check fees. It took months to straighten out, and effected me for a long time. Years later I would write a check in a grocery store and it would be denied.

Stay away from Wells Fargo! (therapy is going well, thank you). My brother banked with them too, and had a lot of trouble. It nearly cost him his business.

Bank of the West is pretty good.

Being an Ex Digital/Compaq/HP Employee, I use Digital Employee Federal Credit Union (www.dcu.org). They are possibly the most wonderful banking institution I've ever dealt with.

I REFUSE to go back to a bank. They are thiefs. They constantly steal money from you, and the banking law's of the US suck, and credit unions get around them.

I did use Huntington Banks for personal everyday banking and then also had some personal things with BB&T Private Banking, but those were in West Virginia. Now everything's with Fleet Bank and so far I've been extremely impressed with their service levels.
