Sixty-four 1GHz AMD Athlon PCs = supercomputer
The initial research application will concentrate on the large-scale modelling of electro-seismic phenomena in fluid saturated material with specialised, parallel Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) and Discrete Element (DE) code being developed in-house.

Me either. However, if 64 1GHz Athalon's are a supercomputer, I'm not impressed.

It's just another Beowulf cluster. There are many of them in operation around the world. They're primarly used for large data processing or calculations.

ilyash, it's more than just a network. One server is running a "master" cluster server application, and the other servers are running the client. The master server sends out processing commands to other computers via different methods, Ethernet in a Beowulf cluster. A good Tech TV - Screensavers episode demonstrates exactly this is http://www.offmyserver.com/cgi-bin/store/cluster.html
That explains what a Beowulf cluster is, how to set one up, and underneath the picture, is a link to the Screen Savers show when they set it up.John Kata
