.. unless you upload enough to make the server run out of disk space. Depending on the partitioning scheme, it could bring the machine down or even corrupt system files and cause the server to be unbootable.
Did you check your quotas and available disk space on the partition you are uploading to?
Run the command "df" from a shell or login to a shell as the user you are uploading as and type "quota".
Also, if this only happened the one time you tried uploading it, then it means nothing. It could easily have been another problem. The logical thing to do would be to try again and see if the same thing happens.
