Community Leaders are forum-wide moderators; they have administrator access on vB. Community Liaisons are forum-specific moderators (ie. they only have access to moderate one or two forums).

As mentioned, leaders are forum wide, liaisons are forum specific, neither group is paid.

Basically, the facilitate discussion on the forums and keep discussion focused on a topic. They assist liaisons and leaders by proactively reporting threads that have violated forum rules.

In the late 90s Geocities used Community Leaders and Liaisons to help patrol for sites in violation of their TOS, but was disbanded when Yahoo took over. Now many mboards use the CL thing.

Yep I used to be a GeoCities community leader in the Hollywood category. I've still got a GeoCities t-shirt and cap around here somewhere they gave me... very nice of them
Although for GeoCities Liasons were actually the top community leader for a category if I remember correctly!

I used to be a CL on the old XOOM.com, in their Help Centre forums. Was lots of fun. Everything came apart when the dot coms started dot bombing...

LOL! GeoCities ... those were the days!
Co-Founder @HostHideout. His totally irrelevant M.Ed. dissertation examines Organizational Culture and Change Management. He also likes Patrik Ervell, Wong Kar-wai and IKEA.
