Managed Server in Germany or Europe?
Hello,
we are running a vB with ~15.000 members and ~160.000 postings and need to upgrade to a Managed Server do tue our concurrent users.
So we are looking for a very good Managed Server Hoster, who has a good connectivity to Germany.
Our wish list:
- P4
- 2GB RAM
- ~2 GB HD/DB space
- RedHat or Debian / LAMP
- Fully Managed including Monitoring, Backup, Updates & Patches
- POP3 & IMAP4 mailboxes
- Access via FTP & SSH
- Cronjobs
We have the knowledge to run a Rootserver, but not the time.
Glad about your suggestions.
Thank you,
-Tom

It depends
At the moment we don't want to pay more than ~$150-200 / €130-180

What exactly do you mean by "managed"? I ask because prices depend on the level of support you have to expect.
OS updates only?

OS and Apache/PHP/MySQL updates, security patches (OpenSSH/mod_ssl) - stuff like this.
We don't really need support, just someone who cares about his server farm and security issues.

I think you ask a lot for $150 - if you take a look at the various offers here in the forum, the biggest problem will be RAM...
Sometimes cheap server offers utilitize a cheap mainboard capable of a max. of 512 MB or hosts simply consider 2 GB RAM "high end"...
Why not search for a reliable provider and ask them? Or you can use the "host quote" feature above...

Okay, then let's try it the other way round.
What good Managed Hosting offers could you (all) recommend?
If this is a forum dedicated to webhostingtalk you should be able to name some.
Forget about the price, if the offer is good, we are willing to pay.
Reliability is most important and stands above features for us.

Rackspace.co.uk is a good managed host, with great track record. I believe their servers are in London. I'm sure the connectivity is great to Germany.

I think that is far away from the budget.

True, they're expensive, and way out of his (earlier) mentioned budget.
But:

Email asking them for their managed options. I'm sure they can work out a deal with you.Never argue with an idiot. They will drag you down to their level, then beat you with experience.

Rackspace has a good name but is rather expensive.
Or you could go with either www.theplanet.com or www.venturesonline.com, VO has developed additional services for needs like this.

if you're looking for a managed box in europe or more specifically germany then give oneandone some thought.
although i think you need to have a german address to purchase.<erno> hm. I've lost a machine.. literally _lost_. it responds to ping, it works completely, I just can't figure out where in my apartment it is.

Bandwith is very expensive if you buy from German providers, otherwise, it seems most of them have SuSe Linux installed on the system and CPanel (in case you need it) is a strange word for them...

If you can get a management service, I highly recommend you check out Rackcheck.com. If you speak to them directly about your requirements, im sure they will be able to offer you a very good price.
Their servers are all in the InterXion Data Centre in Germany (cant remember which one as there is two in Germany).█ Xcellweb.net - Quality Web Solutions That Work!
