    dedicatednow.com VPS problem

    I bought a VPS from a reseller of dedicatednow.com.

It has generally been acceptable until a little over a week ago when I started to get a "cannot allocate memory" problem. This problem causes havoc with cPanel and the server as a whole. It continues until the VPS session is restarted.

My reseller (who doesn't yet know that I found out they are just a reseller) has given a flat "we don't know" on what is causing this issue. According to them they are working through the issue with the makers of the Virtuozzo VPS software.

Do I have any ability to work with dedicatednow.com support myself? I have full root access, but the account isn't actually in my name because the reseller ordered it.

I suspect I don't, so are there any other alternatives?

    Thanks for any suggesitions.

did you run both out of virtual memory and swap space? start with that.

    Thanks Rusko,
The root WHM reports memory use at between 40% to 55%, and <1% swap used.

Keep in mind this is a mainframe VPS so I don't know if that would effect reported usage stats under WHM.

A Google search only reveals one other person with a similiar memory allocation problem under Virtuozzo:

Unfortunately no reply indicating if it ever got solved.

    Ahh well.

If a reseller gives you a flat "we don't know" without atleast pointing you in the right direction ( or atleast right direction in his opinion ), I would suggest you to start looking for a better reseller or buy an account direct from DN.

I agree. I guess you could contact DN directly and explain your situation to them. They may help you directly, or they may contact their reseller (your webhost) and tell them what the solution is so that they in turn can then tell you.

    Thanks everyone,
I certainly agree about saying goodbye to the reseller. They are long gone. I'm just waiting fo DNS to resolve on my new server (with a much more expensive and reliable host) so I can transfer clients away.

I'm doing everything I can to avoid flaming the reseller. I'm worried that they would not even bother to reset the VPS to get me back online temporarily if I did so.

You can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar as the saying goes.

If the new server has resolved by tomorrow I'll probably just transfer the clients and cancel the VPS, if not I'll contact dedicatednow.com and see what they can do for me.

    Thanks again.

Your problem is with the dcachesize. You can see the far right column, failcnt, the number of times that resource was denied to an application.

Based on the "numfile" setting, their dcachesize should have a barrier of 960000 and a limit of 1056000. Ask them to change that, no restart required, and your problem should go away.

Gee thanks ScottD, Jolly, and everyone,
Your help with diagnosis has really been great. I really didn't mean for this to be a "disgnose this" thread, but I'm happy that it sorta has.

Is there any chance you can tell me how to change the dcachesize myself or does it have to be done through a Virtuozzo control or something?

I dived into Google but only found 71 results, and none with a clear explination that I could see.

I'd rather not point my host to this thread and therefore admit that I'm leaving them.

    Thanks once again.

Unfortunately this is not a user controlable parameter and must be changed by the host. The formulas for calculating these parameters are in the Virtuozzo documentation which I believe is only available to licensees of the software.

I'm kind of surprised that the Virtual Server was configured that way because the VZMC software should have complained about that setting. It's a non-critical issue but it should have at least provided a warning. Turns out it's not so non-critical in your case.

    Good luck!

    Thanks ScottD,
I think your sig "Extraordinary Service" pretty much says it all.

I've informed the host of the change that needs to be made. I can only hope they will be as even half as responsive as the posters here.

    Thanks once again.

I just wanted to confirm that the host did implement the settings change as per ScottD's suggestion.

The server has shown complete stability and no signs of the previously reoccurring problem after 12 hours. Considering it was coming back almost every hour at one point, I'm satisfied it has been solved.

I'm looking forward to 8 hours sleep tonight

Hey, cool! Nice being persistent and having them fix it up. If you get a chance, post the latest /proc/user_beancounters as well so we can see how it's fairing in comparison to the previous.

And sleep well! Hopefully that is the complete solution and not just a bandaid.

Wako, /proc/user_beancounters is unique to Virtuozzo.

Interesting, you definitely would have crashed by now with the previous settings. You can see how close to the barrier you were with "numfile" and "dcachesize" (they are related).

Just a heads up, but you've exhausted numtcpsock 710 times and dgramrcvbuf 10 times so far. May want to keep your eyes on those over the next few days and see if it causes any other breakage or perhaps severe latency issues under load.

Will do Scott. I'll post another update to this thread if something breaks. Even the 14 hours of consistancy is a nice break for the moment, but obviously a permenant solution is the goal.

Thanks for the education on beancounters.

I was with another webhost that used Virtuozzo and was having memory problems, never did check out beancounters. I ended up moving to a UML with VPScolo, and have had non of my previous memory problems.

I started out with Dinix also, and had some memory problems with my VPS also. I then went to JVDS/VPScolo, and didn't have any issues. I am now back with Dinix, after hearing that they fixed the memory problems and upped their plans. The problems do indeed seem to be fixed. Running smoothly and quickly now. I notice that Virtuozzo is faster than UML when compiling programs or upgrading cpanel/WHM or serving PHP/mysql sites.

I am not seeing any speed difference between the 2, I am running both right now. But I have a better optimized my.conf running at VPSColo right now. I will be sticking to VPSColo, I like the flexibility to add memory and CPU. I also like to see my entire Memory usage instead of the memory for the entire VPS. Dinix/VPSColo have been both excellent with Customer Service. But Rus has really gone out of his way to help me setup MMCache, and a few others things. Plus I pay less per month with VPSColo so it works for me.
