Hello friends,

I am in a fix in reference of setting up my new dedicated server. I have got two quotes which are attractive enough.

One is $120 per month for a P3, 256 RAM, 10 GB Data transfer and a very good connectivity (checked on netmechanic). This company is not much known and their response time has been slow till now. I needto install Plesk on that server, but i am not sure how to do that. It is RedHat 6.2 and have Apache etc all installed. How do i uninstall them all. I dont want to be in a position of purchasing Plesk and not being able to install and use it.

On the other hand, i have catalog.com who are quoting $240 for more or less the same config with 100 GB data transfer. Their response has been very fast and it comes with Plesk installed.

Actually i am shifting from a outdated hosting provider and therefore cannot deserve to take a big risk (financially or technically).

I would like to have your advice as which option shall i choose ? Please please help !

I would suggest you go with catalog. There support is better right?

Consider the following:

Catalog gives you 100 gb of transfer vs 10 gb, for $120 more than the price at the first company. At a price of $3 per gb (about the lowest price companies seem to charge) for the additional 90 gb, that's a $270 value for $120. What does the other company charge for additional bandwidth, and how much do you realistically think you will use? I hardly think it will match Catalog's price.

Catalog has been responsive to the needs and wants of potential customers. You can find some fairly recent posts here indicating this.

Then, there's the question of service. Catalog's seems to be good and you say the other company's response time has been slow. As I see it, no price can make slow and poor service attractive enough. Since you can't afford to take a risk, I would think the decision is obvious.

I agree with Duster,

go with Catalog. You get what you pay for in this industry and at $120/month I don't think you are going to get a lot. I have emailed Christian Henning several times over the past month and always received a reply in a very timely manner.

If you think you will need regular support to get going than there isn't much of a choice. You can't put a price an good/great support (it's an endangered species it seems!).

And, Plesk comes installed and configured on Catalog servers.

If you don't need a lot of disk space / processing power you might want to take a look at http://dialtoneinternet.com

They have a special right now for the following:

Celeron 333
6.4 GB IDE hard drive
64 mb ram
65 gb bandwidth
$177/month

Their server interface is pretty good and does what it needs to.

I have a similar server configuration and I have almost 100 domains on it and pushing close to 10 gb per month and I find it very fast. I would recommend putting the RAM to 128 like I did.

Or you might want to check out Daniel at http://ultraspeedusa.com

He could put together a package that would more than suit your needs.

Of your two options catalog.com is definitely better

As Duster mentioned no price gain is worth bad service. And it seems like you are not an expert at administering a server ... so good service becomes more critical for you.

there is nothing worse than having a server that is down and your provider is nowhere to be found etc

I went with catalog.com about 3 weeks ago. I am very happy with the product and service I have received. I did have one intermittent connectivity problem that crashed the server at times, but that has been completed resolved.

Their support staff is fast, accurate and has a good attitude. I went there from CT (communitech.net), so I definitely see a huge difference.

If you have a well-managed company with qualified employees, your staff interacts and communicates well with the customers. Poorly managed companies, will have employees with less than adequate attitude and knowledge.

I am no Linux guru, but am learning as I go. My NT knowledge doesn't really help that much . I would recommend catalog.com for their dedicated servers.

I personally have a server at Dialtone Internet. I have been very please with them. One thing that I like abiut them is that if there is any problems they will work with ya! My sales person is Roland, ask for him.

Catalog is not a bad choice either, if they can promise what they do, hey go with the flow!
