I can't believe that the bank didn't immediatly give them the money when they admitted the charges were from the cancelled cards. I was pretty sure it was the law for card issuers to cancel and refund all money if the card was cancelled within a couple days of being lost...but these people cancelled it 6 weeks before charges even started!
