How do providers provide access to online viewing mrtg's? How can the information be extracted from a switch?
First you will need a switch that supports SNMP. Then you need and application like MRTG, RRDTOOL, Cacti to poll the switch and create the graphs.
You can also poll ethernet interfaces on unix boxes if you have the right software installed.
Check out these links:
dont forget RTG, http://rtg.sf.net
Thankyou again (both of you)
I figure if we do something we may as well do it right from the start been busy reading over the last couple weeks
Well, if you utilize a managed switch it'll make things much easier. Doy you have physical access to the server?
Also if you have a box at a data center like EV1, they actually provide server stats on their website, which in turn can be replicated on your own site for your visitors to see.
