Perth is small in comparison to Melbourne (but that's part of its attraction to me). Beautiful and clean city. Get up in to Kings Park, which overlooks the City and rivers. Take the Ferry across the bay to the Zoo.
The beaches from the southern tip to the northern tip of Perth (and beyond) are fantastic. Head over to Rottnest if you get a chance (it's an island off of Perth, though I haven't been there for years so it may not be the unspoilt haven it used to be).
Up in to the hills out east you've got some fantastic views, back over the city and amongst the hills themselves. Dams, quaries, etc. It's nice up there.
It's on the west coast of Australia. Very flat, very sandy. Not many trees. all the houses are made of brick. If it's still the same as when I was there they have skimpy (topless or almost topless) barmaids at the pub on a Thursday and Friday night. That about all you need to know. Oh yeah, Rottness island is worth a trip.
Melbourne would have to be the ugliest city in Australia however Hobart is the prettiest city in the world. If you want a truely remarkable trip go to Hobart/Tasmania.
